Faith And a .45 Put on Hold Until Game Finds Publisher

NOOOOOOOO! I just found out that Faith and A .45 has been put on hold until Deadline Games can find a publisher for the title.

How could a game which such a cool name and a hot red-head female character not be able to find a publisher? This is unacceptable! This is an outrage!

Someone get Electronic Arts, Activision and 2K Games on the phone, because we need to get this game a publisher and fast. I want my Faith And A .45!

Breakout Trailer for Batman: Arkham Asylum

Warner Bros. Interactive released a new trailer for the Batman: Arkham Asylum videogame today and talk about liquid gold mixed with cake!

The only thing that could make this game better for me so far if is they brought in Kevin Conroy from Batman: The Animated Series as well to voice the Dark Knight. Mark Hamill sounds incredible as the Joker and the graphics look stunning so far in the trailer. Pretty sure some of them are in game graphics too, not just cinematic scenes.

I'm glad Warner Bros. choose to go with this type of Batman game instead of Dark Knight game, even though the movie was good because this stuff is turning out to be stellar so far.

More Yummy Videogame Food

My favorite thing videogame related besides crafts is food and the best site for videogame food is Snack or Die. The owner, Jocelyn has been very busy making yummy creations for us in her kitchen and I just wanted to show off a few of my favorite recipes.

For the Rapture fans, there's Big Daddy Cupcakes from BioShock. These yummy treats are made with licorice, M&Ms, and lots of chocolate icing.

For the Sony Fanboys, there's Sackboy Cupcakes from LittleBigPlanet. So cute you want to gobble them up. These cupcakes are made with dobs of chocolate icing and M&Ms.

For the Lucas Arts fans, there's Purple and Green Tentacle Cookies from Day of the Tentacle. These are sugar cookies made with royal icing and apple jacks.

These are just a few of my favorite new recipes from Snack or Die, check out the whole site for a ton of great recipes to serve at your next LAN party.

Finally a Final Fantasy XIII Trailer with some freakn' subtitles, so we can tell the hell is going on in this game! Well, at least what the characters are saying because if you watch the trailer you still don't really know what's going on in the game.

Pyramid Head Bear: Bound to Give Nightmares

I am in craft heaven today!

Otaku Raven over at Live Journal's Girl Gamers received the coolest and creepiest Silent Hill birthday present from her best friend. Made in the depths of the Build-a-Bear store, Pyramid Head Bear comes complete with pyramid helmet, giant knife, apron and air raid siren sound when you squeeze his hand.

This is a pretty sweet present but I don't know if it would be something I would want to sleep with every night. Pyramid Head would have to sleep in the other room, locked away in a cupboard or something.

Epic 8-Bit Art: Giant 3D Perler Bead Mario Pipe

A while back I designed a 3D Mario mushroom from the Super Mario World original sprite design which was a really pain in the neck to make. Today I came across a much harder project that I can't even begin to figure out how the creator made it.

Super Giants Wing's 3D Super Mario Bros. Pipe is made completely out of Perler beads by the looks of it. From what I can see, the artist did various layers from different angles to complete the 3D, rather than going with one layered direction like my mushroom.

I love how the artist finished the piece off with Luigi trying to make his way down the pipe too. Very cute.

Finally a Trailer and Details for Indiana Jones Game!

If any one is dying to know what is going on with the Indiana Jones game, they can finally know some details because Lucas Arts has released a trailer for the coming game, Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings.

The game will be released on the Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS, and Playstation 2 in the Spring 2009. Unfortunately there is no gameplay footage but there is some excellent Indy action. Also the voice of Indy sounds like Harris Ford, which would be cool if he voiced the game.

Hopefully Lucas Arts will give us more footage from the actual game soon.

Lost Recap: The Lie

We, Lost Fans, were treated to a double episode last Wednesday so it looks like I still have another Lost Recap to do before tonight, so here it is:

"The Lie" opens up with Oceanic Six, Penny, Desmond and Frank discussing what they'll tell the world happened after they return to the mainland. Jack tells the gang that they'll have to lie in order to protect the rest of the survivors still on the island from people like Widmore and everyone but Hurley agrees, until Jack tells Hurley that people will think him insane if he tells the truth.

Meanwhile back on the Island, the Losties are trying to start a fire (Neil Frogurt is back) when Daniel arrives back and Juliet suggests the some of them try taking the zodiac out to a shipping lane to seek rescue. Daniel explains that since the island has shifted in time, they would have to calculate a new bearing to sail out on to get away from the island.

Later on that night, Charlotte questions Daniel further about her nose bleeds, sudden memory lost and constant headaches, because these symptoms don't seem odd to Daniel. Miles in his usual weird nature manages to find a boar that died of natural causes in the jungle and this sets into motion a fight between Frogurt and the rest of the Losties.
Suddenly Frogurt is hit with a flaming arrow in the chest (You wanted fire, Neil!) and the rest of the camp notices more flaming arrows coming out of the jungle and make a run for it into the jungle. Some no name Losties die but the main people survive the attack.

Juliet and Sawyer while making their way towards the creek to meet up with the rest of the camp survivors are attacking by three men with guns. A British man named Jones (Name tag on jump suit) demands to know why they're doing on their island. Not happy with Sawyer's answers, the men decide to cut off Juliet's hand before Locke comes out the jungle, knocks out two men with rocks and kills one of them with his knife. (These men could be Widmore's people, Rousseau’s People, The Others or Dharma?)
Hurley is still driving with a passed out Sayid in the car after the events at Sayid's safe house, when he draws the attention of a police cruiser. The officer in the vehicle turns out to be a dead Ana Luca in police uniform who tells Hurley to get Sayid to someone he trusts, get new clothes and definitely stay away from the cops.

Hurley buys new clothes at a gas station and gets recognized as the lottery winning/plane crash surviving guy by the gas attendant while his apparent murder picture is running on the TV behind her. Hurley claims she has the wrong person and drives off with Sayid who is still passed out.

As Hurley pulls out the gas station, Kate pulls in with Aaron in her car and not knowing what to do almost calls Jack for help. Instead she gets a mystery call from someone she knows that is currently in LA and Kate plans to meet up with them.

Kate takes Aaron to a penthouse of a large hotel where they meet Sun. Sun shows Kate pictures of Ji-Yeon and states that she'd like Aaron and Ji-Yeon to play together. Kate tells Sun about the lawyers who came to visit her asking about testing her and her "son." Sun tells Kate that they weren't interested in exposing their lie, they just wanted Aaron. Sun tells Kate that she must do must she must to protect Aaron. Kate questions what take of person, Sun thinks she is. Sun explains that sometimes people must make hard decisions in life like the one Kate made when she choose not to get Jin off the freighter even though she promised Sun. Kate apologizes, but Sun says she doesn't blame her for what she did. (Note: Sun doesn't seem to really mean what she says here. She does blame Kate and Jack and plan to use them to get even with Ben.)

Ben and Jack are still at Ben's motel room and while Jack is in the bathroom, Ben pulls a mystery box out a vent in the room. He tells Jack to go home and gather his stuff to go back to the island, while he takes Locke's body to a safe place. Jack's questions Locke's dead state and Ben doesn't response. (Could Locke be alive? Possible that Locke used the same spider venom that paralyzed Nikki and Paola to make him look dead for a while and Ben knows it?)
Ben heads off to a Butcher shop and meets up with one of his people, Jill the Butcher. (Note: The number Ben takes is 342) He asks Jill to hang on to the important item in his van for him and explains that he has Jack on board but not the rest of the people yet. He asks if Gabriel and Jeffery have checked in yet, which Jill confirms.

Hurley meanwhile has taken Sayid to his parent's house where his Father, David doesn't believe Hurley's story about what happened at the safe house. The police show up and Hurley asks his father to lie about him being there. David wants to take Sayid to a hospital but Hurley believes Sayid won't be safe there.

Hurley's Mother, Carmen arrives home and finds Sayid barely breathing on the couch. This causes Hurley to ask his Father to take Sayid to Jack, so Jack can help revive him and find out who those men were attacking them at the safe house. David agrees and takes Sayid to Jack.

While David is away, Hurley breaks down and tells his Mother the truth about what happened on the island from the moment they crashed and explains that they’re lying is causing all these bad things to happen now. His Mother tells him that she doesn’t understand everything that he has told her but she believes him.
Jack tells David he must take Sayid to a hospital, despite what Hurley said about Sayid being in danger and this prompts David to tell Jack to do what he must, but stay away from Hurley from now on. Jack takes Sayid to the hospital but calls Ben in the process to tell him about the situation. After injecting something into Sayid, Jack manages to wake him up but is attacked by him. Sayid quickly realizes its Jack and backs off. Sayid once calm expresses concern to Jack about where Hurley is and who is with him.

Of course, Sayid has concern because Hurley is home alone at the moment when Ben confronts him in order to get him away from the police and take him apparently to where Jack and Sayid are waiting. Hurley remembers that Sayid told him to never trust Ben and to always do the opposite to whatever he asks to you too and runs out into the arms of the awaiting Police Officers that have been staking out his home.

Next we are in a room with a hooded figure sitting in front of what looks like a Dharma Station computer (There's a logo on the computer) and a chalk board where she is calculating something. A pendulum can be seen swinging over a map, marking out locations in the oceans of the world. There appears to be Dharma binders next to the computer in the room. The screen flashes "Event Window Determined".
The figure goes up some stairs into a room where we find Ben and tells he only has 70 hours to complete his work, to which he says he needs more time. The figure is revealed to be Ms. Hawking. She states that if Ben can't get all of the Oceanic 6 members back in 70 hours, then "God help us all."

Lost Recap: Because You Left

So we finally got the first episode of Lost for Season 5 and what an episode! Some questions were answered and of course, a hundred new questions were raised.

In this episode, we meet our favourite Dharma orientation film guy, Marvin Candle who we find out is really Dr. Chang and that he has a wife and baby on the island during the construction of the Orchid station. (Note: Dr. Pierre Chang goes by Marvin Candle and Mark Wickmund, both Candle based names) Now is this Dr. Chang's real baby born off the island or some poor unfortunate castaway's baby? Is the baby Miles or Charlotte or just a random baby?

Also the scene here with Dr. Chang and his family fore shadows the time anomaly on the island by showing a skipping record and the alarm clock goes off at 8:15 (more numbers). Great Willy Nelson song. We see Dr. Pierre Chang making the orientation film for the Arrow station which was apparently for defence purposes against hostile elements on the island. Smoke monster anyone? (Note: Dr. Chang is wearing a Swan Station logo on his lab coat but he's making an Arrow Station film.)

We learn that Orchid station was build close as possible to the donkey wheel, so Dharma could harness the power from it for time travel but they had to do it without actually releasing the power. This power causes a miner to bleed out his head and possibly die, and the rules are confirmed for us again. Finally we see a tie-less Faraday who doesn't look a day younger than he does in the present day. So Faraday knows how to time travel! MCFLY!

Ben and Jack talk about going back to the island with Hurley, Sayid, Sun, Kate and Aaron. All of them must go back along with Locke (now apparently dead) in order to save everyone on the island. Jack shaves his terrible beard finally and Ben tells Jack that he admitted to ruining Locke's life before he left the island. Also Ben flushed Jack's pills in order to clean him up. (Note: Ben asks Jack if Locke told him what happened after they left the island and Jack says no. Ben is probably sniffing for information to see if Jack knows if he killed Keamy and set off the bomb on the freighter.)

Sayid and Hurley are running from the mental intuition after Sayid kills the strange man outside and breaks Hurley out. They are attacked at Sayid's motel room which is setup like a room of death with the hidden gun and dishwasher with the knives blade's facing out. New way to die: Death by Dishwasher!

Unfortunately Sayid is knocked out with tranquilizer darts and Hurley is left with ketchup on his shirt and a bunch of dead guys. "We never should have left the island, dude!"

This puts poor Hurley on the news as a possible murderer and he must run with a passed out Sayid in tow. During this run from the scene, Hurley is confronted by Ana Lucia who tells Hurley to find someone he can trust, to stay away from the cops and that Libby says Hi. Of course if a dead person tells you to do something, you do it and so Hurley starts the car and heads off to find help.

Kate is confronted by Dan Norton from Agnostini & Norton at her home who serve her with a court order for her blood and Aaron's blood in order to determine her relationship to Aaron. They refuse to tell her who their client is (Guesses: Ben or Sun trying to make her run or Whitmore being a dick), so Kate tosses them off the property but not before they threaten to come back with the police. This causes Kate to pack her bags, a gun and a whole lot of money, so she and Aaron can run.

Sun is traveling to Los Angeles (15 and 23 over P.A. system) when she is detained by Whitmore is ticked that she approached him in the open. He sees it as an act of disrespect. So Sun explains her hate for Ben and that she blames him for the death of Jin. This is enough for Whitmore to let Sun head off to her flight. Sun seems much more deathly this season. Not a woman to mess with.

Heading back to the Island 3 years ago at the moment of the island's move, we see the flash of light and suddenly the freighter is gone from the horizon and Locke is now alone in the jungle without his new Others tribe. Locke witnesses Eko's brother, Yemi's plane crash again on the island and like a dope; he tries to reach the plane even though it's full of killer drug dealers and a dead Yemi. While climbing Locke is shot in the leg by a past Ethan who doesn't know Locke and disappears after a second flash of light causes the island to shift again.

Now the plane is down on the ground as Locke left it after Boone's death and suddenly Richard shows up to patch Locke up. He tells Locke that he must bring everyone who left the island back in order to save it and in order to do this, Locke must die. Richard gives Locke a compass (the same compass from when Richard met Locke as a boy?) and tells him to give it to him later because Richard won't know who he is. All this is done very quickly as Richard knows the island is about to jump again and he will disappear. Sure enough the island flashes again and Locke is left alone with the plane back up on top of the Pearl station.

The other Losties still on the island have also experienced the flash and are also feeling the effects. As Sawyer and Juliette notice the smoke from the freighter has disappeared from the skyline, they are interrupted by a frantic Bernard who can't find Rose. Rose then comes running out of the jungle, terrified by the light and asking what happened. Sawyer tells everyone to go back to camp, so they can figure out what's going on but Bernard informs him that the camp has disappeared with the flash of light.

Returning to the site of camp, the Losties find that the camp has indeed disappeared. This is when Daniel Faraday and his other boat companions show up to explain that the camp has not disappeared but rather it has not been built yet. (INSERT DRAMATIC MUSIC HERE!)

Daniel asks someone to take him to a man-made building in order to figure out what's going on and Juliette offers to take him to the Hatch. Sawyer, Miles and Charlotte all tag along for the walk and Sawyer soon gets into a fight with Daniel when he demands his shirt and an explanation for what's happening to the island. Daniel explains that the island is like a giant record is now skipping and that's why the camp disappeared, because the losties are now somewhere else in time on the island.

Time flashes before they get to the Hatch, so when they get there the station is still blown up, so Daniel determines the time is sometime after the Losties crashes on the island. Time flashes again though, and returns the Hatch back to its pre-blown up state. At this point, the island must be at a pre-crash point and Sawyer decides to knock on the back door and get Past-Desmond to open the door, so he can get supplies.

Daniel explains to the group that they cannot change the past in way and as such Sawyer get Desmond to come to the door because it didn't happen in the past that way the first time. Thus they cannot keep anyone from leaving the island to head off to the freighter either.

Sawyer finally accepts this and he, Juliette and Miles head back to the camp area. This is when Daniel notices that Charlotte has a nose bleed and becomes noticeably upset by this. (This is bad because the last people to get nose bleeds were the people on the boat who were shifting through time and ending up dying.) He sends Charlotte on her way as he stays behind to "get his pack at the Hatch". What he really does is knock on the Hatch back door to get Desmond to come out. He explains to Desmond that he is special and that the rules don't apply to him. Also tells Desmond that everyone he left on the island is now in trouble and if he ever gets home that he must go to Oxford and find Daniel's mother.

Now Desmond wakes up with Penny in the present and tells her he was back on the island. Pen reminds him that was three years ago and says he must have been dreaming. Desmond says it wasn't a dream, it was a "memory" and that they have to go to Oxford. (Note: Desmond and Penny appear to be wearing wedding rings. Does this mean they got married?)

The episode also has a flashback to right after the escape where the gang is back aboard Penny's boat, Searcher and Jack is convincing Desmond, Penny, Frank (the helicopter pilot) and the rest of the Oceanic 6 to tell the big lie about how they're the only survivors, so Widmore doesn't kill the strand-aways. Hurley doesn't want to lie, and thinks if all of them come clean, they can get help for their friends, but no one will back him up, not even Sayid. Hurley tells Sayid he'll remember how Sayid didn't have his back, and he'll do the same to him, someday.

Lost Recap: Destiny Calls - Clip Show

So Lost finally premiered last night with a clip show followed up by 2 brand new episodes, "Because You Left" and "The Lie". While most people would find the clip show boring and only watch it to catch up on the bits and pieces of the Lost storyline that they had forgotten, you have to remember that the great thing about a Lost clip show narrated by show producers, Damon Linedof and Carlton Cuse is that they love to throw little tiny hints into the mix for their viewers.

For example, the producers never refer to Claire as dead, just that she walked off into the jungle with her father, Christian Shepard. Also when talking about Sun feeling guilty about her Jin's death, they say that she's feeling guilty because she believes she left her husband to die on that freighter. "Believes" is the key word here, because means Jin could still be alive. Especially since the freighter didn't sink right away.

Sometimes it's worth it to watch a clip show to find out some new and wonderful things.

Stay tuned for more Lost Recaps for "Because You Left" & "The Lie"

Review: Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe
Midway Games, Midway Amusement Games
Available for Playstation 3 & Xbox 360

From the moment Midway announced their plans to develop the strange fighting game mash up, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, I have been watching the game progress with curiosity and some fear as this seemed like a possible recipe for disaster. When any two franchises are brought together, one can always expect the results to be either very good like in the case of the Lego Star Wars or very bad like RoboCop versus The Terminator, and MK vs. DC had many of us wondering what Midway was planning with this concept. Luckily for them, this game has some really cool concepts and managed to fly even without the traditional fatalities system.

In Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, the brutal combatants of the Mortal Kombat invade Metropolis and the rest of the DC Universe after Raiden destroys Kahn by blasting him through a portal and at the same time on Earth, Superman defeats Darkseid by blasting the super villain with his heat vision as he enters a teleportation device. These acts do not destroy either of them of the villains, but merges them into an entity known as Dark Kahn, and this causes the DC Universe and Mortal Kombat universes to merge.
The game's Story Mode recounts this crossover invasion from both the DC and Mortal Kombat perspectives, as the DC heroes suspect another Darkseid plot and their Earthrealm counterparts fear another Outworld assault. Infecting both sides is the mysterious rage energy that overwhelms their senses, causing them to see friends as enemies and supercharging their fighting abilities.

In addition to the Story mode, the game also offers a more traditional Arcade Mode featuring the standard Mortal Kombat 10-fight contest from years past. Players can chose to play Mortal Kombat only, DC only and mixed fights, but in either case the ultimate villain is Dark Kahn.

The game features 20 combatants, 10 from each universe, with two unlockable characters. The Mortal Kombat side features Scorpion, Subzero, Sonya, Shang Tsung, Kitana, Jax, Liu Kang, Raiden, Kano and Baraka, while DC is represented by the Joker, Catwoman, the Flash, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Deathstroke, Lex Luther, Captain Marvel and Green Lantern. The unlockables are Darkseid for the DC side and Shao Kahn for Mortal Kombat.

While the Mortal Kombat characters were able to slide through this series with their fatality finishing moves still intact, the DC heroes were given a series of brutality moves which keep with their “Thou shall not kill” attitudes. Keep in mind though that this is a teen rated game so don’t expect to play your favourite MK character with the idea that their finishing moves are going to end in glorious blood and gore because that doesn’t happen. Jax still crushes a skull or two with his big mechanical arms, but their heads do remain intact as they fall to the ground.

The game has online and local versus play which held up pretty well on the Playstation network. The online play had you choosing from a list of 100 people in the a chat room to compete against. You could issue a challenge or wait for someone to issue you one and then either accept, decline or ignore the challenge. The chat room allowed for voice or text chat amongst the other players and you could play against friends but you would have to choose the room to play in before you logged online. Apparently the Xbox 360 version had better player and ranked match system for their online play for those gamers with a choice between the two systems.

While each character’s moves were pretty easy to pick up after a couple hours spent practicing, I found it especially annoying that the finishing moves were only available online and not found anywhere in the game manual or in the in game instructions. Though most people have the internet nowadays, it still seems pretty silly of the developers to assume that all players will be able to track down the control sequence online to pull off the finishing moves for each character. Would it have killed them to publish it in the manual?

Being that I haven’t play a Mortal Kombat game since the third instalment came out in the arcades way back in the day, I was actually a little giddy to finally sit back down with the franchise. The graphics are so different from the video screen shots used on the original Mortal Kombat game and the environments though still so terrifying, have come along way from the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo’s 16 bit screens. Each character and environment reflected the energy of the storyline and had that spectacular comic book feel. I especially loved some of the arenas like Wonder Woman’s Themyscira and Shang Tsung’s Island that had the two worlds actually merging into one as the two combatants fought. Brilliant.

Finally the audio is always fantastic in the Mortal Kombat games with appropriately intense music and the loud cracks of hand-to-hand combat. Moves like uppercuts and ground slams are accompanied by some great, deep bass that will shake your surroundings if you're appropriately equipped. While there's plenty of great new sound, there's also some old stuff like Scorpion's "get over here” and the announcer’s “Fight” & “Flawless Victory” which both sound like they are straight out of the old games.

While I was unsure at first about this weird, little mash up of the Mortal Kombat series, I am happy to say that my favourite fighting franchise is still as wonderful as ever. Though my fatalities may not be as brutal as I want them to be and my Joker isn’t voiced by Mark Hamill, I can push those tiny flaws aside to enjoy the fact that Mortal Kombat is still an amazing fighting game which great characters, wicked combos and a good storyline to finish it all off. Fans of the series will be happy with what Midway had done to renew the series and hopefully some DC fans will come over to embrace the series as well.

Wicked Duck Hunt Lamp

This cool Duck Hunt Lamp was created by Craftster member, Fluffypants, out of a Nintendo Zapper gun and Duck Hunt cartridge cardboard replica as the real one was too small.

The shade was made out of some foam pieces and a shade picked up at a flea market. We gamers are pretty crafty people when we want to be.

Videogame Art from Maria Sunderland

I love to feature artists on my site and a while back I promised to post about an artist known as Maria Sunderland from Deviant Art.

Her real name is Jessika and she lives in Ottawa, Canada. She became interested in the arts when she was 13-years-old and is a huge fan of Sailor Moon and Sonic the Hedgehog. Jessika has a college degree in Fine Arts and a bachelor's degree in Arts and Design. Her art style tends to be more comic book and though she started her artwork as a hobby, she now takes orders for commissioned pieces.
Jessika has done several videogame fan art pieces for BioShock, Silent Hill, Kingdom Hearts, Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil. I've posted a few of my favorite pieces from her Deviant Art page here, but please check out the whole gallery to see all her work and also check out her webcomic, Drunk Duck.

My Mother's Day Present - Link's Awakening

So I'm over at my Mom's house right now complete bombed on prescription pain killers for my migraines, so pardon my bad writing or lovey-dovey moment. I'm at my Mom's house right now because once a week I stay over night in order to go to a Headache Clinic in Toronto to get nerve blocks for my migraines. Not the most fun experience to get 12 needles in your head but it helps to dull the pain, so I deal.

Anyway, today I found in the dining room an old Mother's day present from when I was a kid. It was a cartoon I drew from an old Nintendo Power Issue cover. The 50th issue had a special Link's Awakening cover that featured the owl from the game and my Mom loved owls, so I drew the owl for my Mom and gave it to her. It was part of the gift I gave her for which I can't remember the rest.

I can't believe my Mom still had the owl drawing so I thought it would be cool to scan it and post it. Not bad for someone who can't really draw that well.

Review: Exit DS & Pipemania DS

Exit DS
Square Enix. Taito
Available for the Nintendo DS

Exit DS isn’t exactly a new game to the market as gamers will remember its premiere on the Sony PSP and then its appearance on the Xbox Live Arcade. Fans of the game won’t find anything new in its latest incarnation but a control system created to fit the NDS stylus and even that you may find yourself turning off to work with the easier D pad system.

For players unfamiliar with Exit on any system, you play as Mr. ESC, a Dick Tracy a-look-a-like that spends his days professionally saving civilians from disaster. Using Mr. ESC, you must work your way through 100 levels saving innocent people from burning buildings, snow storms, etc, all by solving the puzzles that impede your way. Puzzle must be solved by using items, moving objects and using saved civilians’ help.

The simple cartoon graphics make use of basic colours and shadows for a unique look not often seen in many videogames. As I said before, the main character looks like he was pulled from the logo for the Dick Tracy movie as does the world around him. The puzzles will keep you on your toes with multiple items and different civilian uses always popping up plus the game always provides some head scratching moments.

The stylus controls aren’t exact, so I found switching to the D pad controls a little easier. Gamers who have played this Exit already on the PSP or XBLA won’t find any new levels or add-ons on the Nintendo DS, so don’t worry about picking up this version. If you haven’t checked out Exit before, this is a great place to start as any, especially when the asking price is just $20.

Pipemania
Empire Interactive, Atari
Available for the Nintendo DS

If you never played the original Pipe Mania, the rules are simple: connect pieces of pipe to get the sewage to the drain. It’s a simple concept, but relatively fun. Pipe pieces are laid out Tetris-style on the top screen, available only one at a time for you to place. You have a short time limit to start placing the pieces out on the grid. You are given, of course, a start point and end drain. You have to take the given piece and place it, somewhere on course you want to make. The strategy early on is essentially planning ahead with your drain pipes.

Your strategy must change as you acquire new moves that are only available in certain areas later on in the game though. For instance, some boards allows you to draw your own piece and place it, while others want you to lay down pipes while hunting for a treasure chest on the board. These new elements tend to make the game much harder in long run.

There is a story mode that actually has cartoon cut scenes that are voiced by a narrator that sounds eerily close to Michael Caine from Batman fame. While the story and goofy characters are cute and give you a good intro to the game play, the arcade and classic modes are perfect for extending the replay value of the game with extra levels. As you play through the story mode, you can unlock bonus modes, art, and other goodies in the Treasure Room.

Pipemania, though not the next Game of the Year title, has been a great time waster since it came out in 1989 on the original Amiga. For casual game fans looking for something to challenge their quick thinking mind, I suggest giving Pipemania a go for only $20. The extras in the game make it worthwhile.

The History of Videogames: Animated

The history of videogames is an animated film created by Kyle Downes, a very talented multimedia and animation student from Australia. It was unveiled as his final project for his degree a couple of months ago and though not a lot of sites have been posted about it, when I saw it on Dark Diamond.net, I figured it was too amazing not to post about it too.

The video is short at about 3 minutes but its well worth the watch.

Dr. House as Gordon Freeman?

I was checking out Phia's 1up blog when I came across a post about celebrity and videogame character look-a-likes. Though her comparisons were good, the best one came in the comments.

Microsoft's CES Keynote: Halo and More Junk

Microsoft held their keynote at CES 2009 which covered the Halo franchise for 2009 and improvements coming to the Xbox Experience this year. Now I'm sure the Halo fans are stoked for Halo Wars and Halo 3: ODST and that's good for them, but the rest of the crap that Xbox announced was boring.

The game creator looked like something Nintendo should be selling to their casual market and not Microsoft to their key gamers and the fact that Microsoft is talking about the PrimeTime channel again is nothing new. We knew about it already and it should have been available at launch time with all the rest of the new features on NXE.

Show us something we didn't already know about or something we care about. Thanks.

New Form of Pixelated Nudity - NSFW

In the past I've written about pixelated nudity in videogames but artist and photographer, JeanYves Lemoigne gives new meaning to the term with his unique series of photographs.

Depicting ladies as a series of 3D pixels instead of flesh, JeanYves has given a new texture to his nude models among their real environments. Almost like a digital image born into reality.

To see all the pictures in the series, you can see them here at Immersion Blog or dig through all his work at his official site, JeanYves Lemoigne.com. Just remember that some of the pictures are NSFW.

The Girl Gamer's Top Ten Videogames of 2008

1. Fable 2 - Xbox 360

In the land of Albion, everything you choose affects yourself and the world around you, so remember that because the next time you burp in a stranger’s face it might just lead to you developing some glowing, green eyes and a set of horns. Fable 2 tops my list of the best videogames of the year because it had just enough of everything I wanted in a videogame to keep me coming back day after day. From smart-mouthed gargoyles to beautiful environments, the land of Albion provided players with the freedom to do whatever they please and the best place to do it in. How many games will let you massacre an entire town, kill bandits, have 3 spouses and cross-dress if you want to? This is gaming freedom at its best.

2. LittleBigPlanet - Playstation 3

Another game which proves that gamers love the chance to show off their creativity was LittleBigPlanet which had gamers all over the world adopting their very own Sackboy or girl to the start of the journey through a world fuelled by dreams. With the choice of playing the pre-created levels or creating your own, LittleBigPlanet was full of hours of game play and some sweet Sackboy fun.

3. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots - Playstation 3

As next chapter in the Kojima masterpiece, Metal Gear Solid 4 was probably the first game to show how videogames and movies are merging into a single medium. With hours and hours of beautiful cinematic cut scenes and a complex storyline to draw you in, you never minded how much time was spent watching the game as opposed to playing it because you felt like you were helping progress an interactive movie rather than a videogame.

4. Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Precipice of Darkness Episode 1&2 - Xbox Live Arcade, Playstation Network

After spending years poking fun at the gaming industry, creators of the hilarious web comic, Penny Arcade created their own videogame which took all that was moral and sane, and threw it out the window. The final product was a comical role-playing/adventure game which was rolling on the floor, laugh out loud funny. I personally can’t wait to download Episode 3.

5. Boom Blox - Nintendo Wii

When Steven Spielberg and videogames came together, we got the unique and innovative Nintendo Wii title, Boom Blox which had players of all ages addicted to toppling its block formations. Its various game play and easy to pick up controls made this the perfect family game but its complex puzzles kept even the smartest players busy. This year had so many bad third party Nintendo Wii titles that games this good need to be recognized, lest they fall by the wayside and get buried in the bargain bin.

6. Grand Theft Auto IV - Xbox 360, Playstation 3

Rockstar has always managed to raise the bar with each GTA game they release but this time they blew away all previous games in the series as well as any copycat title with GTA IV. From the living city to the meaningful characters, this game gave new life to the GTA series and provide that the guys at Rockstar still knew how to make a sell out videogame. Hopefully new “The Lost & Damned” downloadable content available in February will be just as good as the main storyline for this game.

7. God of War: Chains of Olympus - Playstation Portable

If all PSP games were this good, the Nintendo DS wouldn’t have a leg to stand on but unfortunately God of War: Chains of Olympus is very alone as the handheld masterpiece that it is. It was just as good as playing GoW2 on the PS2, but just on a smaller screen and that’s hard to say that about any PSP game, even the PS2 ports. If you own a PSP and you don’t own this game, then you need to drop everything and buy it now because this is the system seller.

8. Spore - PC

Though it may have not been the game that we were all promised, Spore was still a highly addictive and creative game from the mind of gaming genius, Will Wright. The freedom to control everything from your creature’s looks to its movement gave players a vast artistic outlet and the massive amount of user content on the internet from this game proves it. This was several games in one and possible one of the best deals in gaming this year for your money.

9. Professor Layton and the Curious Village - Nintendo DS

This Nintendo DS had players following the whimsical Professor Layton into a village of puzzles and tons of head-scratching fun. The Professor made logic puzzles cool and top hats even cooler. The cute animation cut scenes made the game fun to watch as much as it was to play and I know happily that I’m not the only gamer looking forward to the sequel’s release in North America, so expect more logic puzzle fun with the Professor to head our side of the planet soon.

10. Patapon - Playstation Portable

With its cast of one-eyed warriors and soundtrack of toe-tapping tunes, you can’t deny this Patapon was definitely drumming to its own beat which made it stand out amongst a sea of PSP titles. This unique and innovative music game managed to ensnare tons of PSP players with its siren song and happily, the sequel for this charming game has been recently announced so soon there will be more attacking to the beat.

Honorable Mentions of 2008

Game with Best Character Name - Mirror's Edge (Faith)
Any game with a character that shares the same name as me has to be mentioned. Best of all, I didn't even have to bride anyone at EA or DICE to get a character named Faith.

Best Indie Title - World of Goo
Getting to spend hours making structures with little balls of goo that make cute little noises is pure ecstasy to me and I'm happy to see this little title make it big.

Best Mashup Title - Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe

I think we all laughed our butts off when this game was announced but despite a lack of fatalities this game is pretty cool to play. I've already finished the DC storyline and plan to tack the MK side soon.

Best New Game Character in Need of Merchandising - Sackboy (LittleBigPlanet)

This character screams make a plushie out of me and while we're on the topic, how about a LittleBigPlanet TV Show, breakfast cereal and "How to Knit" series of books.

Best Revamp of a Series - Prince of Persia
Personally I hate the Prince of Persia series and could never get pass the few couple of levels in any of the game series without giving up due to boredom or frustration, but the newest installation in the series is amazing and I love its Assassin's Creed feel. The art style is also a wonderful new change.

Best Use of Colour - de Blob
This game was addicting as it was fun. Both a colourful and enjoyable game to play, de Blob was a great third party title on the Nintendo Wii which was a hard thing to find this year amongst all the hundreds of garage titles.

Tripod's Gonna Make You Happy Tonight: Sweet Gamer Love

Songs that celebrate and poke fun at the geek culture are becoming much more frequent nowadays but before Nerdcore rap and songs like Code Monkeys hit it big on the internets, there were groups like Tripod traveling the comedy circuit promoting their brand of geek humour.

Tripod is a musical comedy group from Australia which has been performing together since the late 90s at different festivals. They've had a few albums out like Open Slather and Songs from Self Saucing. They're famous for songs like "Comic Shop", "Dungeons & Dragons" and "Gonna Make You Happy Tonight".

Check out the band performing Gonna Make You Happy Tonight in the video below. This song talks about the true love that gamers show towards their lovers behind closed doors.
