Video Game Music Rocked This Year
From the always awesome iPod or iPhone ads which always have the best music featured in them to the truly moving to my personal favorite of the year, the theme song for Mirror's Edge, "Still Alive" by Lisa Miskovsky.
If you have any to add to the list for the year from videogame soundtracks or commercials, or even some tech commercial, leave me in the comment field. I'm always looking to add stuff to my play list.
Sony Must Have a Cool New Marketing Team
The Playstation 3 Murals commerical that promotes games like LittleBigPlanet and Resistance 2, plus the PS3's BluRay player, has got a unique art style and a very catchy tune that would make even an iPod commercial jealous.
The music in the commercial is called "Everybody Ona Move" by Michael Franti and Spearhead.
The commercial also does a great job of promoting the PSP's games and movie use.
Congrats Sony for finally moving away from commercials that confuse us or use talking rodents. Keep up the cool new marketing campaign.

Review: Lego Batman
Warner Bros. Interactive, Traveller’s TalesAvailable for the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, and Nintendo DS
It’s hard to believe we didn’t get a videogame adaptation of this summer’s blockbuster, The Dark Knight and though there’s been rumours circulating that a game is still in development, Batman fans will just have to settle for the whimsical Lego Batman game, at least until the upcoming Batman: Arkham Asylum steps in to bring us a taste of the darker side of the Gotham Knight.
Not straying far from the formula that made the brick-breaking antics of Jedi Knights and adventuring archaeologists such fun, Batman's Lego makeover delivers a mostly familiar but chock-full-of-fun experience.
As Batman and his boy wonder sidekick, you and possibly a friend (option co-op play) will bust Lego bricks, solve puzzles and chase after Gotham’s most evil through 15 missions. While the concept and mechanics will be immediately familiar to anyone who’s played the previous Lego games, there’s no denying the charm of playing as DC Comics' iconic heroes and villains in their cute blocky forms.
And while much of the game play and design isn’t far removed from Traveller’s Tales’ successful formula, they have added some small but significant touches, making this one much more than Lego Star Wars with a Batman paintjob. For starters, the heroes have access to a variety of ability-enhancing suits; so rather than relying on a variety of characters who possess unique skills, the dynamic duo when outfitted in the proper get-ups, can do what it might have taken a handful of characters to accomplish in previous Lego games.
In addition to tweaking the recipe a bit with this suit-switching mechanic, Lego Batman also places a greater focus on vehicle segments; you won’t spend a ton of the game behind the wheel of the Batmobile or Batwing, but the few times you do find yourself in the driver‘s seat, you’ll appreciate the game play shift from the usual plat forming and puzzle solving.
If the special suits and Bat vehicles don‘t get you going, then Lego Batman’s absolute best feature, the ability to play as a variety of Batman baddies, will surely will. The second half of Lego Batman has you reeking havoc on Gotham as all the Batman villains including Catwoman, the Joker, the Riddler, Scarecrow, Two-Face, Poison Ivy and many more. From Joker’s joy-buzzing to Catwoman’s whip-cracking, these blocky bad guys and their signature abilities steal the show. There isn’t a villain in the Batman universe that isn’t in this game, so don’t worry about missing your favourite either. From Harley Quinn to the Mad Hatter, the lesser known villains get a chance to drive the police of Gotham nuts.
Whether fighting for justice or looking to unleash chaos on the streets of Gotham, you’ll be treated to the best Lego game visuals yet. The characters all look amazing, and the villains especially are brought to life with bizarre, yet worthy-of-the-license likenesses. Plus their animated quirks add a ton to the already rich characterizations. Gotham also looks great; sure, it's darker than the candy-coloured backdrops you might be accustomed to from this series, but it's true to the Dark Knight genre. In addition to being the best looking Lego title to date, it also sounds great, due in no small part to the mood-setting inclusion of Danny Elfman’s score from the films.
Lego Batman, while offering plenty of new, although small tweaks to the can’t-miss formula that’s driven the Star Wars and Indiana Jones titles to the top of the sales chart, feels pretty familiar. If you’ve played those other titles, you’ll feel right at home in the Dark Knight’s plastic paved Gotham. Batman fans will be especially happy with how the developers have treated the franchise and though the game is probably not as dark and gothic as we would like, Lego Batman will hopefully keep you deep in bat gadgets and super villains, long enough for Arkham Asylum to hit store shelves.

Last Minute Gamer Gifts
I know a lot of people tend to be last minute shoppers, so if you're struggling to find that perfect gift for your favorite gamer, don't fret because I have a ton of great ideas.Star Wars Lightsaber Stylus 3 Pack
Though they won't fit into your Nintendo DS stylus slot, these amazing little lightsaber styluses are perfect replicas of Yoda, Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi's lightsabers and what geek wouldn't want to play DS games with those.
Star Wars Lightsaber Light Up Stylus 2 Pack
If you have a huge Star Wars fan in the house, I really suggest grabbing a set of the light up lightsaber styluses for a stock stuffer as well. Modeled after Yoda and Darth Vader's lightsabers, these styluses light up with a tiny LED inside to make them look like the real deal. I spent more time playing with mine and then using them to play games.

Nintendo DS Expression Kits
For the Nintendo fan, a Mario or Princess Peach expression kit is perfect to add flare to their boring Nintendo DS. Each kit comes with a character case, a screen cleaner, 2 screen protectors, a pen stylus, a soft 3 game disc holder and stickers to customize your Nintendo DS.
The kits comes in Mario, Princess Peach, Yoshi and Shy Guy designs. I grabbed a Mario kit in an effort to protest the extreme amount of pink accessories I've gotten for my Nintendo DS.
Guitar Hero World Tour Guitar KitsIf you've got a wannabe rocker in the house, you can also look into the new Guitar Hero World Tour Guitar Kits to customize their gear. Available in 4 different styles, the kits contain a guitar face cover for the new GH: World Tour guitars, a set of drum sticks and a guitar strap. Best of all, the drum sticks are actually better quality than the ones you get in the Guitar Hero World Tour game, so the kit is worth the buy just for them.
Nyko Wing Wireless Classic Controller for the Nintendo WiiFor the virtual console lover, I highly suggest you pick up a Nyko Wing Wireless Classic Controller to replace their Nintendo classic controller. Not only is it wireless which means no more playing with the controller attached to the Wii remote, but it allows for recharging of your batteries via a USB port. You can even use the USB port to play without any batteries. It plays just a good as the original classic controller but with more features. Definitely a hot buy.
Nyko Xbox 360 Intercooler TSThough the original Intercooler systems were not the best product to use, Nyko has gone back to the drawing board and come up with a newer and better version of the Nyko Intercooler to solve all the previous problems. Knowing that the Xbox 360 requires a lot of cooling space, the Intercooler TS can be attached to the back of your system to ensure a cooler and safer running system.
The intercooler has been redesigned to run on its own power supply via an AC adapter plugged into the wall and not into the system. The new TempSmart technology senses when the system is overheating and turns the fans on as needed, plus the unit has been reduced in size for easier installation.

Happy Holidays from Ubisoft

Today I went to the mailbox and found another sweet Christmas card from the nice people at Ubisoft Canada. They sent me a holiday card with a pop out paper rabbid and greetings in multiple languages. Of course, I love anything rabbid related so I put my little Splinter Cell agent together as soon as I got the chance. The inside of the card showed 3 other rabbid types though ... Altair, Shawn White and a normal rabbid, all in papercraft form.

If anyone got those, post them because I want to see.
Review: LittleBigPlanet
Sony Computer Entertainment America, Media MoleculeAvailable on Playstation 3
While Nintendo has held the attention of the young at heart gamers for quite a long time now, Sony has finally thrown their hat into the ring with their own delightful child-like, yet challenging game, LittleBigPlanet. Media Molecules’ long awaited Playstation 3 exclusive platformer finally came out this October into the hands of all the eager Mario fans wanting to test out the different side-scrolling fun and to all the creative artists looking forwarded to diving into the level design features.
Diving into the world of LittleBigPlanet, you are given a little Sackboy to journey through all 51 levels in story mode as well as all the user content levels and your own created levels. This little Sackboy is yours to dress up as you see fit in the outfits and accessories provided by the game. New outfits can be found in later levels or downloaded and purchased from the Playstation Network each week. You can even make your Sackboy show emotion or move his arms and head if you wish to give more life to him during your journeys. How cute!
The story mode levels have you running through themed platform areas collecting bubbles, stickers and items for points, all while racing against the clock towards the end of the level. A certain amount of points are awarded at the end of level depending on how well you completed the course. Each level has you running, jumping, falling, and working with the physics of the level in order to survive all the traps and obstacles that lay in wait for you. Some levels even have race points worked into them which awarded you items based on how quickly you finish them.
Though you may think by looking at LittleBigPlanet that this is some cute little kid’s game, be warned that it was created for young at heart and not the actual young. The levels were designed to be difficult and the obstacles hard to survive. I spend hours and hours just trying to get past the first level on the third garden, all because one spring board kept falling over on me. Timing was everything and I didn’t have it.
The level creation is where the game gets even more complex. While I have seen some of the most creative levels ever designed by gamers on LittleBigPlanet, it took me 2 hours just to get through the tutorials alone and I can’t even fathom how many for my actual level which was created and deleted in the beta version of this game. Yeah, imagine my pain when I found out my level would be deleted after the beta closed.
The level creator for some people has been the cat’s meow and all you need to do to see that is log on to the user created levels and play a few. Some are absolute pure genius but for the artistically retarded like me, the fun was all in the story mode and playing the user content. Honestly though, I might have enjoyed the level creator more if I had more time to put into it, instead of just designing by the seat of my pants.
I did have some fun decorating my pod which is the little tree-house building where you can choose what area of the game you want to play in. Here you can use all the stickers and items you’ve found throughout the game to decorate the pod any way you want. I covered mine in fabric flowers and sea shells.
Stylistically this game is a design student’s wet dream as each level is covered from start to finish in the stuff dreams are made of. No one object is created from just one material; its almost like someone robbed a junk yard to design all the items in this game. Being that this game is just so beautiful to look at, I almost hate that the level designers decided to make the game so difficult to finish. How could they make something so wonderful in so many ways, so frustrating to play? They made my Sackboy cry!
The music in this game is a mixture of different artists from around the world and the soundtrack will probably have you seeking out some of the songs on iTunes before long. Luckily you’ll find the whole soundtrack available for download which I highly recommend. I love it when a game studio takes a risk and inputs new music into their game; it’s even better when it pays off for them too.
I know the gaming market has been a flood of hyped game titles over the past few months and with the lack of money in everyone’s pockets right now, purchases are more frugal than ever but I can’t stressed how great and important a purchase like LittleBigPlanet is. Company’s like Sony tend not to publish games like this and if they don’t sell, they tend not to publish them ever again. Games that spark the imagination and bring the community together like this are worth making and worth buying, so for once put down your first person shooters and fighting games and trying something different. There’s a lonely little Sackboy out there that will love you for it.

Download Some 8-Bit Carols & Help Save a Puppy
I'm sure everyone has noticed I love to post a lot of bead sprite art on my site and if you've been paying attention to those posts then you'll probably know about my friend, Doctor Octoroc, the bead spriter that creates the amazing and huge art pieces.Well, the Doc a week ago found out his puppy, Ein is very sick with impassable bladder stones and it is going to cost him quite a bit to have the stones removed. I've had the same situation happen to me in the past and let's just say I could have bought a nice big screen TV for what I spend on my dog that day.
In order to pay for this huge surgery, the Doc asking for a $15 paypal donation for a full download of his very cool 8-bit Christmas album, 8-bit Jesus. Each song is a combination of a retro videogame and a well-known Christmas carol. All of them are really well done and though you can download the album for free, for the sake of Ein, Doc is asking that you donate to the cause for the download.I know times are tough on everyone right now but there are 18 tracks on the album and at $15 for the whole album, that`s less then a $1 per track. Better than iTunes. Help a fellow gamer and his puppy out for Christmas this year.
You can check out 8-bit Jesus here and find out where to donate by heading here.
I Made the Front Page!

I've been writing for the Pulse Niagara for about a year now and this week I got the best Christmas present from my editor ever.
My Lego Batman game review got front page coverage and not only was that the coolest thing in itself but the art design was incredible too. They did it up in comic book and Lego lettering.
I love Batman and this was so special. A Littlebigplanet cover would have been cool too though. I love that little Sackboy. :)
I promise to post my Lego Batman review this week.

Epic 8-Bit Art: Meet Purple Tentacle!
I plan to make the Green Tentacle too and maybe Bernard and the gang, but they may be kind of big to make. The Purple Tentacle is about a foot high to begin with.
Sooner or later I plan to take all my Lucas Arts creations and frame them to hang up.

Review: Mirror’s Edge

Electronic Arts, DICE
Available for Xbox 360, Playstation 3 & PC
There was an enormous amount of hype and marketing over the summer leading up to much anticipation for the release of one of EA’s newest games, Mirror’s Edge. Brought to us by Swedish developer DICE who have taken a chance on making an innovative first person perspective game that for once isn’t based around confrontational gunplay but rather running away from your enemies.
Mirror’s Edge is set in an unnamed city where most citizens have given up their freedoms to a totalitarian government which controls all aspects of society keeping it safe, sterile and devoid of any real culture. For those wanting to live outside of this conformist dystopian existence communication can be tricky with Big Brother constantly watching so they employ people called Runners who are depended on to deliver packages, messages and other sensitive items safely.
You play as Faith, a Runner who uses an acrobatic style of Parkour to deftly traverse city rooftops, along walls, inside buildings, storm drains, train stations or anywhere else to avoid detection by authorities and reach her goal of delivering packages. Faith’s estranged sister Kate is a police officer who finds herself framed for a murder she did not commit. Faith’s attempts to uncover the conspiracy behind the framing and free her sister quickly evolves as the game’s plot and is told through various uniquely animated cut scenes and in game action.
Mirror’s Edge is designed to be played at a breathless pace and from a dizzying first person perspective that will have you as Faith running, leaping, lunging, balancing, sliding and tumbling through environments to reach seemingly impossible destinations. You’ll be helped along the way by your mentor and former runner Mercury who guides you via an earpiece advising you of trouble such as approaching police. You can choose to engage the relentless cops, trying to disarm or even kill them but the game generally encourages you to avoid confrontation. Realistically, Faith has a very low tolerance for gunshots.
The game’s control scheme is fairly simple: one button is for all up actions such as jumping, hurtling over obstacles, scuttling up vertical surfaces, and pulling Faith onto ledges. Another button is for all down actions: sliding under pipes, ducking into vents, and tucking and rolling out of dangerously high jumps. Two other buttons trigger systems at Faith’s disposal: reaction time and runner’s vision. Reaction time slows things down and allows Faith to better execute moves or combat and runner’s vision will provide Faith with a hint on which direction she should be headed. All controls are easily mastered via the in game tutorial.
Graphically Mirror’s Edge is stunning. The bright beautiful environments are richly saturated with primary colors and is a refreshing change from the brown and gray realism of recent games like Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty or Gears of War. The city itself appears vast but at most times feels under populated or abandoned aside from the game’s sparse cast of characters and police. To help immerse the player the screen features no HUD, you’ll only see Faith’s arms, hands, legs and feet. Standing on the edge of a skyscraper, looking down can truly make you feel woozy. Audio wise the game is excellent contributing to the complete immersion with sound effects like Faith's breathy heaves and plodding footsteps. There is also a pulsing driving soundtrack that helps to increase tension at just the right moments.
While the game demands a quick pace, much of it is played through trial and error. It is not often clear on the direction you should be taking and time and time again you will die trying to figure it out. Let me repeat that, you will die again and again and this can be very exasperating. Runner’s vision is not nearly as helpful as it should be and although the game discourages you from confronting attackers occasionally it does force you which can be frustrating because Faith’s combat skills are pitiful against heavily armoured police.
Quirks aside Mirror’s Edge feels most fun once you do know where you are going, building momentum as you run, vault and jump through some precarious situations. Once the main storyline wraps players get additional replay value from the game’s surprisingly fun time trial modes and downloadable content.
Mirror’s Edge is an innovative action adventure first person platformer that could be the start of something very good, its ending certainly leaves the door open for a sequel. One of the most original titles out this year makes it a must play for most gamers.

Dead Space Custom Action Figure
Though I hate the idea of chopping up or destroying a perfectly good action figure, I guess it's okay if you're doing to create an even better action figure. For example, see what Chris Hooton made from an X-Men "Cyclops" action figure ...
An amazing Dead Space action figure with a light up helmet. Now that's worth destroying an X-Men figure over. Now he can be the only kid on the block with his very own Dead Space figure.
At least until EA makes their own to sell. Then Chris is back to being just the guy who destroyed a perfectly good X-Men figure again.

Super Metroid Helmet Cake
One of my favorite cake designers on the internet, Debbie Does Cakes created this wicked cool Super Metroid Helmet Cake back in October 31st.
I love how she can create such a wicked piece of art and not even know what the hell it is. A true artist can do anything when they have the internet to find picture though.
This was created as a groom's cake.

Legend of Zelda Fan Robs a Bank: We're Sending Tingle After Him
Apparently some guy robbed a bank in Waterbury, Connecticut on Monday wearing a Legend of Zelda hat and we gamers are disappointed.Bad enough we have to deal with the public thinking we're all a bunch of hooker bashing, police killing psychos but now even the gentle Nintendo fans have to worry about getting labeled as bank robbers because of this idiot.
Next time wear some kind of trucker's hat with a sports team on it or better yet be a smart bank robber and wear a ski mask, so no one can identify your face in any possible way. Dumb @ss.

New Unlockable Skin Revealed For Prince of Persia
Ubisoft fans will be happy to hear that there is another unique skin that is unlockable for Elika in the new Prince of Persia. This cool outfit is a tribute to Jade from Beyond Good & Evil, one of my favorite games.I believe the skin becomes unlockable once you defend the game the first time. While the outfit comes complete with Jade's staff, it does not actually act as a weapon for Elika in the game. With all that magic though, does she really need a weapon though?
