Cleaning out the video game vault

I'm putting up a couple of my DS games for auction on eBay - Cooking Mama and Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales.

Happy Towel Day and Star Wars Day!

March 25 is the truly the best day if you're a geek at heart. Today we celebrate the 30th Anniversey of Star Wars otherwise known as Universal Day of the Jedi and today is also Towel Day in celebrate of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Being that I'm a huge geek, I had to show off my kickass towel from HHGG that I won from a 6.10 am radio contest. I have the book, movie and keychain too but can't seem to find the keychain and the movie is a copy, so here's a picture of the book and towel only.

I also have a bunch of Star Wars figures from the 70s which I got for my boyfriend. We have Leia, Chewbecca, Yoda, an Ewok, Stormtrooper, C3PO, Obi Won and Luke. Cool, huh? I especially like the wookie.

So Happy Towel Day and Universal Day of the Jedi! Don't forget to bring your lightsaber and towel out with you today.

Dawn of Mana for PS2 in Stores Now

Allow me to give you another reason why you shouldn't give up on your PS2 yet. Meet Dawn of Mana, the next game in the World of Mana series and hopefully the next big hit in the Square Enix series of RPGs.

Here's the official press release from Square Enix:

SECRETS REVEALED AND NEW DIMENSIONS FOUND IN SQUARE ENIX’S DAWN OF MANA – SHIPPING NOW

Origin of the Sword of Mana and the Mana Tree Revealed in this Exciting 3D

Adventure LOS ANGELES (May 24, 2007) – Square Enix, Inc., the publisher of Square Enix™ interactive entertainment products in North America, announced today that DAWN of MANA™, the next installment in the WORLD of MANA™ series, has shipped to retail outlets across North America. Just in time for summer, this exciting adventure, developed exclusively for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system, is the highly anticipated follow-up to SECRET of MANA™, the timeless classic that originally mesmerized North American audiences in 1993. HEROES of MANA™, developed exclusively for the Nintendo DS™ and the next title released in the series, will ship August 14, 2007.

After the unveiling of the WORLD of MANA series of titles in 2005, fans have been eager to experience the next installment in the popular MANA series. DAWN of MANA at last reveals the origins of the legend behind the Mana Tree and the Sword of Mana. Freed from the limitations of two-dimensional graphics, DAWN of MANA brings the world of MANA into 3D for the first time while preserving the atmosphere that fans have come to know and love. New characters and environments join familiar monsters and elemental spirits from previous MANA titles, with cutting-edge rendering techniques that preserve the signature beauty and subtlety of the acclaimed series.

About DAWN of MANA

STORY
Long ago, when the world was at peace and magic was yet unknown to man, the beautiful isle of Illusia floated in the center of the Inner Sea. Over the island towered the Great Tree, the source of all life and creation. There it had stood since the dawn of the world, but over time, the tree gradually turned to stone and slept as though death had at last arrived. So begins the story of how a boy came to wield a sacred sword and how a maiden became a goddess, entwining the fate of spirits, mortals, and the entire world into a captivating tale of hope and despair.

FEATURES

• Cinematic production values are amplified by a gripping opening theme composed by Grammy and Academy Award winner Ryuichi Sakamoto, and a sweeping score from series composer Kenji Ito

• Instant accessibility makes the game fun and intuitive for a wide variety of gamers – simple controls and quick “pick-up-and-play” mechanics make the game fun for long-time fans and newcomers to the franchise

• Witness a beautiful lighting system that softens the game world, exuding a feeling of warmth and subtlety that cascades through trees, over the hills and onto the elements of vividly detailed landscapes fans have come to expect from the MANA series

• Different weapons and gameplay mechanics allow multiple ways to approach enemies – attack head-on with the sword, use the slingshot from afar or manipulate the environment with a whip to cause a fantastic avalanche of boulders – guaranteeing no two adventures are the same!

For a limited time and while supplies last, the Breath of MANA™ music sampler disc will be available at Amazon.com, Game Crazy, GameStop, and EB Games as a gift with the purchase of Dawn of Mana.

About HEROES of MANA

Breathing new life into the vaunted MANA franchise, HEROES of MANA takes the beloved series into an entirely new dimension. In the first real-time strategy title for the series, generals will plan, plot and strategize their way to victory on the battlefield. Command an army of heroes, creatures and beloved rabites with the use of the Nintendo DS Touch Screen, and experience an all-new perspective on the ever-evolving MANA saga. Players can see how they rank among others in the country by accessing the HEROES of MANA servers via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. HEROES of MANA is being developed by BROWNIE BROWN Inc.

Both entries in the WORLD of MANA series continue the legacy of the MANA series, as they provide fresh and unique takes on the familiar universe that has captured the hearts of fans around the world.

DAWN of MANA has been rated T (Teen) by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB). DAWN of MANA is available at North American retailers for the suggested retail price of $49.99. For more information on DAWN of MANA please visit http://na.square-enix.com/dawnofmana/. HEROES of MANA has been rated E10+ (Everyone 10 and older) by the ESRB. For more information about the ESRB please visit www.esrb.org.
Look for my review of this game in a week or so.

NGamer Magazine has the first images of the new Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 which will be available for the Nintendo Wii and DS at the end of this year. In the first shot, the text is unreadable but the second pictures are readable

First picture: "Oh No. We bet you a million pounds that this chap is going WAHHHH! Thank god NGamer doesn't come with singing birthday card sound technology."

Second picture: "Good to Squeeek! Rabbids on moblie phones? Could listening to the remote speaker play a bigger part in the sequel?

Jack Thompson needs a new hobby

I've really wanted to post this picture for a long time and this is a good as time as any. Created by Mike Thompson aka Boy of Tomorrow from Gay Gamer.net, this comic is pure genius and I love it. This is going up on the fridge, Mike.

Today Destructoid.com posted about how Jack "Isn't getting laid" Thompson is now suing Microsoft over the release of Halo 3. Jack demands that Microsoft uses their marketing team to ensure that no person under the age of 17 downloads or buys a copy of Halo 3 or Jack will sue them.

Jack, did you ever hear of a little thing called the ESRB Rating system? Well that's a committee that rates each and every video game sold in stores, so that Mommies and Daddies know what games are appropriate for their kids and stores selling the games never sell a game to a child that isn't old enough to play the game.

If this ESRB rating isn't enough for you be satisfied with, then maybe you should start a campaign to make parents aware of what the ESRB rating is and that they should follow its guidelines when buying games for their kids. The game industry is putting the ratings on the games and the stores are suppose to be following the guidelines of those ratings for selling them to specific ages, so in most cases, if a game gets into the hands of an underage child, well then Mommy or Daddy bought it for them.

Besides Microsoft has a age verification system on the official Halo 3 website before the game has even been rated, so more than likely the game will get a teen rating or higher. Isn't that enough, Jack?

Seriously dude, get yourself a hooker and get some action for once. This gaming violence obsession isn't healthy. Maybe you should see a doctor about it.

Ubisoft Announces Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 for DS and Wii

So my favorite screaming rabbits are coming back for another game for the Nintendo Wii and DS and I still don't have a copy of the first game. HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?!

Well, I refuse to buy the game on any other platform other than the Wii and since I don't have a Wii yet, well I still have to wait to claim my copy of the Rayman Raving Rabbids game.

Soon my pets soon ...

Expect to see the new Rayman game with a whole bunch of new mini games available to help save the world from the bunny invasion. The game should be in stores by the end of this year.

Halo 3 Legendary Edition

The $120 Legendary version of Halo 3 comes with this Helmet and Stand. It's nice but can you wear it to the mall? Not sure I'd want to fork out double the cost of a game just for this big paper weight unless I could actually fit it on my head.

How about you, Halo fans? Are you going to buy it?

Cheesecake and Video Games

Another day, another site promoting half naked gamer girls to the public. Don't get me wrong here, I like pretty pinup girls as much as the next person but its seems lately that the Nerdcore culture which was brought to the attention of the gaming industry but my pal and Nerdcore King of Destructoid, CTZ, has been over played by too many people now.

Just in the last week, I have received My Space Friend requests from two different sites promoting gamer girl pinups or models and I'm starting to feel that maybe this isn't the right way for gamer culture to go. Ladies who game are great and more power to us but is it really necessary for so many people to create these model sites to put the hot gamer girls on a pedestal like they are something special. Geek is geek and just because a girl geek happens to develop boobs later in life who gives damn.

I've been informed more than on one occasion that the gaming industry is sick and tired of people trying to cash in on the whole "Hot Nerdcore Chick" thing and maybe they've got the right idea. This doesn't really give put us gamers in a good light if this is how we portray the female gaming population. Isn't there enough Hugh Hefners and Larry Flints in this world to cash in on the female form? Do we as a community need to add pressure the female gaming population to throw on lingerie and pose with our controllers?

I posed once for a Nerdcore picture once and it didn't get the response I hoped for. I was deemed less of a gamer for it and maybe the real female gamers in these pictures need to think about the kind of gamer they want to be seen as before they pose. Gaming should be about gaming; not about rubbing a controller between your thighs.

The first site advertises gamer girl models that pose in non-nude photos but they still have them topless and covering up their goodies with their arms or in bra and panties. I say that we, ladies start posing with our gaming accessories with our clothes on. Full jeans and t-shirt with no cleavage, then maybe someone will see that as a good image and start a girl gamer model site where the girls are covered up for once.

*For the people leaving the nasty comments - before you do: I'm not fat and I'm not bitter. I just think these kind of sites are sending the wrong kind of message to young female gamers that they have to be pretty to be a professional gamer. There are enough Cosmos and Playboys out there to make a young girl feel ugly without the gaming industry adding their two cents on the female form.

If you want to add to the topic, then do so without attacking me personally.

Best Video Game Theme Played by a Guitar Ever!

I found this song a while ago and it just popped back into my head a few days ago at work. The Duke Nukem 3D theme song is wicked as is but with the guitar rendition of this theme done by Chris Kline makes it all that much better.

If anyone has the MP3 version of Chris Kline's Duke Nukem, please email it to me. I truly want to rock out to this in the car and maybe at work. :)

Check Chris "Vertex Guy" Kline's website.

New Little Big Planet Trailer

Other than MGS4, Little Big Planet is the only game that makes me want the PS3. This cute little game is much like the cutsie DS games that I love so much and it will definitely be on my "To Buy" list. With customisable creatures and amazing graphics, I think this could be the game to nab the attention of the dedicated Nintendo market. This blows Animal Crossing right out of the water, people.

Free Swag for Gamers: Hardcore Gamer Magazine

Time for another edition of Free Swag for Gamers. The last time I reviewed Konami RPG Stars and it was a great site to score free stuff from. I’ve managed to bag 2 free games and a strategy guide from them since then and I hope everyone who signed up for the site is scoring some wicked swag too.

Today I’m reviewing Hardcore Gamer Magazine, a community Web site created for readers of the magazine to get together and talk about gaming and get points for it in the process. If you know of any other community sites like Hardcore Gamer Magazine, send me the site's address and I’ll give it a look.

What is the purpose of this community Web site?

Hardcore Gamer Magazine is a community site that allows readers and non-readers of Hardcore Gamer magazine to converse about gaming. Members can participate in challenges, weekly trivia, fan art contests and caption contests to gain points which they can use to purchase items in the site’s store.

What can members do to gain points?

Members can finish challenges like creating a new logo for the magazine or just entering some questions for an upcoming interview with game designer for the magazine. Members can also answer weekly trivia questions and create captions for the weekly picture caption contest. Members can even subscribe to the magazine for 500 extra points. Unfortunately there is no referral system or link system setup to gain points from.

What other activities can I participate i
n on the site?

Hardcore Gamer Magazine has forums for the members to converse in, news articles, editors’ blogs, a web comic and a downloadable version of the magazine to read, and a theatre to watch game trailers in.

How great is the item selection in the store?

Items ranged from a 600 point Bully football to a 7000 point signed copy of Dead Rising. Most of the cheaper point items are just that – cheap, but if you save your points, there are much better items available in the higher point level like a Vivi Plush from Final Fantasy IX or Ultimate Ghosts and Goblins for PSP.

How easy is it to get store items?

All you need is just the right amount of points to claim any prize in the store but points are not easy to come by and with each challenge giving you a small amount of points for completion, expect to wait a long time before you get enough for something cool in the store.

How is the shipping time for the items?

Prize shipping is done in batches, so you could wait several weeks for your item to come. Though it does seem a little long to wait for your item, you really can’t complain when the item is free in the first place.

How often is the site updated?

Trivia questions and the picture caption contest are updated on a weekly basis but the challenges can ranged from every 2 weeks to every month depending on how many challenges are still available to complete.

Are the missions easy to complete?

Hardcore Gamer Magazine tends to have a lot of challenges that require photo shopping skills which tends to make it difficult for us non-artistic types to complete them. You can still complete other challenges like the HGM Pokemon Night where you just have to enter your Pokemon Diamond or Pearl friend code to play with other Pokemon players in a tournament or the 28 Weeks Later challenge where you just need to take a picture of a zombie scene with some fake blood and your Barbie dolls and send it in to the site.

Do you suggest signing up for this site?

If you have a lot of time and patience, then I suggest you sign up for this site but if not, pass on it. The challenges typically don’t give a lot of points and when they do, you really need to work to get them. Even if you just stick to just doing the trivia contests and picture caption contests, it will still take forever before you can get something worth while in the store. Artistic gamers will love this site for the many art challenges but it’s really not worth the time for the non-artistic gamers to sign up.

Do I suggest signing up for the magazine subscription?

Heck, no! The whole magazine is nothing but reviews and previews which you can easily access on the internet. Not worth your dollars in the long run. The only time I suggest you buy it is if your fan art ends up in the magazine one month and you wanna show it to your mommy.

Hit the link to sign-up for Hardcore Gamer Magazine.

Bruce Campbell vs the Wii

The King of B-Movies talks with Game Daily about being a cult figure, how he can take on the Wii and all things Spiderman.

Bruce on Video Games:
Speaking of nerd -- how much does your multiple video game voice-over gigs -- the latest in the Spider-Man 3 game -- up your geek cred?

Probably a lot, but the real geeks don't need my help as a tutor -- they just get on to playing the game.

You've said that you never play games because you suck at them. Do you? Or is that just an thinly veiled excuse to not waste your time staring at blips on a TV screen?

I was pretty good on the primitive games -- Asteroids, Berserk, etc. but the only "video system" I can use is the Wii.

OK -- the Evil Dead games were, uhh... underwhelming to say the least. Why do you think the unique feel of the movies is so hard to translate?

Because it's impossible -- even if we tried to repeat it in movie form. Gamers should never expect a game to be close to any original movie -- they will be destined for heartache every time.
Check out the interview here.
