Support Men's Health in Movember with Rockstar and The Girl Gamer
I have decided to join a global movement known as Movember to bring much needed attention to men’s health and prostate cancer.
Movember is the month formerly known as November where men start clean shaven and commit to growing a Moustache for the entire month. That’s right, the Prostate Cancer Society is bringing back the Moustache to raise funds and awareness for men’s health. All the funds I raise go directly to Prostate Cancer Canada.
What many people don’t know is that 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer to afflict Canadian men with 25,500 diagnosed and 4,400 dying from the disease each year.
Now clearly I can’t grow a moustache but the love of the men in my life has convinced me I should get involved and I am hoping that you will support me with a donation.
To make a donation, you can either:
- Purchase one of my moustache necklaces over at Pixelated Creations for $10 plus shipping. $5 will be donated to the Prostate Cancer Society of Canada.
- Click this link http://ca.movember.com/mospace/158621/ and donate online using your credit card or PayPal account
- Write a cheque payable to ‘Prostate Cancer Canada’, referencing my Registration Number 158621 and mailing it to: Prostate Cancer Canada, 145 Front Street East, Ste. 306, Toronto, ON M5A 1E3, Canada.
Prostate Cancer Canada will use the money raised by Movember for the development of programs related to awareness, public education, advocacy, support of those affected, and research into the prevention, detection, treatment and cure of prostate cancer.
For more details on how the funds raised from previous campaigns have been used and the impact Movember is having please go to http://ca.movemberfoundation.com/research-and-programs.
Now for you men out there, Rockstar is running a contest in conjunction with the Prostate Cancer Society to support Movember and Men's Health. Starting November 1st, all men are required to shave their face clean and then grow the most wicked moustache possible. The person with the best mo with be immortalized in the upcoming Rockstar game, Red Dead Redemption.
Contest details are available here.
Do you need any more reasons to get involved?

Top Ten Hottest Videogame Guys of 2009
Nathan Drake is like the male version of Lara Croft but without the exaggerated features and its about time, we, gamer girls got our own hunky tomb raider. Honestly I think anyone could see why I would want to watch Nathan's butt swing from ledge to ledge for hours, but if add in his sexy voice, daring adventures and too close for comfort movements with his female companions, then its completely obvious why Nathan is the prime choice for my number one hottie.
2. Sergeant John Forge - Halo Wars
Halo Wars was the first Halo game I actually played and watching cut-scenes with the hunky Sgt. John Forge in them really helped me love this game. Not only is he a sexy military man in body armor but he also saves the girl and gives the ultimate sacrifice. You can't get much more hot and heroic than that.
3. Gunnery Sergeant Edward Buck - Halo 3: ODST
The men of Halo are hot this year. Gunnery Sgt. Edward Buck didn't just steal the heart of Dare, he also stole my heart and probably the heart of a lot of female Halo fans. Voiced by sexy FireFly star, Nathan Fillion, Buck is another military man in body armor that gives Master Chief a run for his money.
4. Batman - Batman: Arkham Asylum and DC vs Mortal Kombat
Do I really need to explain this one? Men in capes and tights are hot. Batman is my personal fav in the super hero realm and after an amazing appearance in Arkham Asylum, he just had to my list. Honorable mention to Commissioner Gordon - he is looking hot for an old guy.
5. Albert Wesker - Resident Evil 5
What can I say - I love a bad boy. Wesker has always made me tingle since I first saw and heard him in Resident Evil: Code Veronica and his appearance in Resident Evil 5 still makes me love him despite his tentacle problem. Wesker just needs a little love and perhaps a woman with a whip to put him in line. I'm totally up for that.
6. Vin Diesel - Wheelman and Chronicle of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena
I love it when real hotties are in videogames like Vin Diesel. Vin had two appearances this year in Wheelman and Chronicles of Riddick and he is totally hot in digital form. Too bad the games weren't. I'd rather have Vin the flesh but playing with his digital copy is nice too. Run for me, baby.
7. Matt Hazzard - Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazzard
Another newbie to the list though the game developers like to have to believe otherwise, Matt Hazzard is another hottie that the ladies love to love. This cute has a great sense of humor and a good knowledge of videogame history. What more does a gamer girl need?
8. Chris Redfield - Resident Evil 5
Chris Redfield is a veteran hottie but that doesn't mean he doesn't have a few new tricks up his sleeve. Chris came out in Resident Evil 5 this year with a whole new look and while I wasn't keen on the roid physical, the sexy face of Chris was still there. Plus once you mow down hordes of zombies with a guy, you just can't help but keep on loving him.
9. Guybrush Threepwood - Tales of Monkey Island and Secret of Monkey Island: SE
If there ever was a pirate with a heart that could out do Will Turner, it would be the original - Guybrush Threepwood. Quick witted and skilled with a bag of items, Guybrush won over the heart of a Governor and he has won over the heart of this girl gamer over and over again.
10. All the Ghostbusters - Ghostbusters: the Videogame
What can I say? I love geeks and the uniforms are just so hot. "Bust'n makes me feel good"
Review: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
SCEA, Naughty Dog
Available on the Playstation 3
Playstation 3 owners pay attention because your game of the year has arrived as the latest title from Naughty Dog, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Nathan Drake is back and this time the developers at Naughty Dog have taken their sweet time with him and given him the best of everything. Once you play this game, you’ll never look at a Tomb Raider game the same way again.
When the first Uncharted arrived on the Playstation 3, it was a pretty game and it had potential but wasn’t mind blowing. Nathan Drake has since had time to learn and grow and he has finally found his wow factor.
Grabbing elements from movies like National Treasures and Indiana Jones (the good ones), Uncharted 2 follows our treasure-hunting hero, Nathan Drake on a new quest through exotic locations to find the lost fleets of Marco Polo and more. He is joined on his journey by a past lover, Chloe Frazer and an old partner in crime, Harry Flynn and plus a few other familiar faces along the way.
The game opens with a wounded Nathan waking up to find himself on a train car about to fall off the ledge of a snowy mountain. I loved this opening because you have no idea how he got there or how he got wounded - just that you have to get him to safety before the train car falls. It really puts you in the moment. While the game follows a complete linear structure with no room to explore Drake’s world beyond the paths laid out for you, one can complain as it is a beautiful path full of daring escapes and puzzles just waiting to be solved.
I was a little disappointed in the control layout and sensitivity in this game. I found most of my deaths were caused by control issues more then by anything else. For example, I died a lot because Nathan wouldn’t climb up a ladder and instead moved off to the left or right... right off a darn ledge or cliff. You spend a lot of time running from enemy gun fire in this game and the control scheme was not made for all these fast-paced moments.
The multiplayer mode offers up a few recognizable game play modes like death match, plunder (capture the flag), etc that will actually impress those hardcore fans. With so few good exclusive multiplayer games on Playstation 3, Uncharted 2 might actually be one of those titles to fill the multiplayer void on the system. The 2 bonus boost abilities given to each character really add some cool elements to the game as well as added skin purchase ability. Once players tire of the main campaign, it’s nice to know that a good multiplayer element is waiting for you rather than something that was tacked on as an afterthought.
The combat play has been improved upon with a blind fire option to fire from cover and a better hand-to-hand option. In game, you’ll be astounded with amazing “By the skin of your teeth” and “Oh sh*t” moments which have you controlling Nathan through some of the most incredible game play moments in gaming history I have ever seen. Imagine fighting enemies as a building collapses around you or running from a helicopter’s spray of bullets as you scale buildings in order from escape it or even fighting enemies on top of a train as a speeds through an exotic land. Those are the moments that will have to glued to your TV.
I don’t think words can really explain how beautiful this game is. I could fill pages and pages full on amazingly detailed this game is. From the moment you watch Nathan walking through the snow; you know this is one of the best looking and most realistic looking games out there. Every location, every character and every single object has its own life in the game and you will take notice. Best example is the characters: since the first Uncharted, the characters have received new life – they look more textured, coloured and all the use of mo-cap actors really pays off. Each characters moves and looks exactly like a real person would - Nathan shields his face against fires, limps when he’s hurt and more.
There is no doubt that the developers at Naughty Dog managed to finally make Uncharted the game it should have been. Playstation 3 owners should definitely have this game in their library and non-PS3 owners should consider buying the system just to play this game. I personally loved this game and plan to play it through at least one more time. Expect to see this game on my games of the year list in January.

Review: Madden NFL 10 & NHL 10
Electronic Arts, EA Tiburon
Available for Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Nintendo Wii, PSP and Playstation 2.
Fall is a great time to be a sports fan with the MLB playoffs in full swing and both NFL and NHL seasons already underway. Two of the most popular sports franchise video games have been released and are being enjoyed by thousands of sports fans around the world and this week we take a look at those two perennial favourites, Madden NFL 10 and NHL 10 both from EA Sports.
For video game football fanatics the annual release day of Madden is always considered an unofficial holiday and this year’s edition like every other promises to improve on its predecessor. With EA Sports holding the only official license for NFL, video games players have come to expect a high standard from the franchise and every year there seems to be a little give and take. New features are added while other less successful ones are either tweaked or omitted entirely.
This year developers have focused heavily on improving the overall gameplay mechanics in several ways. Reducing the game’s speed slightly has opened up the running game tremendously and provided players with better abilities to time their jukes, avoid defenders and open up holes making it much more accessible and fun. WR’s and DB’s have noticeably improved route running and coverage and the all new PRO-TAK, or procedural tackling provides realistic blocking and massive gang tackles on ball carriers. Quarterbacks also have improved avoidance techniques at their disposal however they are based on the QB’s overall abilities so don’t expect to fling that ball up there as a last resort to avoid a sack without it being intercepted unless you are Tom Brady. What some might say is a long overdue mini-game that has players fight for fumbles via a new mechanic has been introduced and works well and at appropriate times. The passing game feels great though this year’s game still suffers slightly from your AI receivers running out of bounds at the most inopportune moments.
Madden 10’s menu system has been streamlined allowing you to get where you need to go fast within the game’s many modes. Long time fans of the series will be happy to finally see the addition of a deep online franchise mode where they can compete with up to 32 players following real NFL scheduling, live drafts and participate in online message boards. Other modes feature online co-op and a streamlined superstar mode with both providing excellent improvements and depth for casual or hardcore players. Creation and customization of teams and players is still around this time adding even more options for to play around with.
While the back to basics approach to gameplay is quite noticeable this year the attempted improvements in some of the presentation falls flat. The expanded TV broadcast style presentation featuring hosts from the NFL network is a great idea but is implemented poorly with slow and repetitive cut scenes, overused referee events and atrocious and often completely inaccurate play by play announcing. I long for the days of Al Michaels and John Madden calling the shots. On the bright side procedural awareness, the system which allows each player to realistically follow the ball using head, eyes, neck and shoulders looks great and so are many of the subtle graphical improvements on uniforms, stadiums and events happening on the sidelines.
Presentation aside this year’s Madden NFL formula is solid and should provide fans with enough improvements to justify the annual upgrade cost especially when it comes to the core football gameplay.

NHL 10
Electronic Arts, EA Canada
Available for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360
Last year’s edition of EA Sports NHL series won an astounding and deserving 12 sports game of the year awards so this year’s NHL 10 certainly has a tough act to follow. While there aren’t any major overhauls in this year’s game I suppose you could say if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, just tweak it. This series just continues to be the best hockey video game ever made.
NHL 10 does add some new features to its already rock solid gameplay and simplistic controls. NHL 10 emphasizes a new board-play component, where a defender can pin a player with the puck against the board temporarily restraining an offensive threat by taking him out of the play. Alternatively the pinned player can manoeuvre out of the pin by passing the puck to a nearby teammate or as a last resort instigating a fight. Board-play adds a welcome new element to the game without slowing it down and once you’ve become accustomed to it using it to your advantage creates entirely new strategies.
Also new this year is a revamped first person fighting engine, allowing fights to happen much more frequently and giving players more satisfying fisticuffs than in previous years. Your fighter inevitably ends up in the penalty box either way but hammering your opponent can have the advantage of giving your team a much needed boost in morale.
The very popular Be a Pro mode returns this year allowing users to either create his own hockey player or use an existing superstar and try to take him through the ranks of the NHL. New additions to this mode include the use of a prospect game to determine your draft position and the ability to be a “tough guy” player whose job it is to protect your team’s superstar. The EA Sports Hockey League or EASHL is back and lets you create an online Be a Pro and join other friends to form a team. Other new game modes this year include Battle for the Cup which drops you right in the middle of the Stanley Cup playoffs and Be a GM mode which enables players to build their own dynasty team through drafting, trading, and signing skaters.
This year EA has given players more options in customizing your style of gameplay from the casual to hardcore via additional sliders allowing you to follow your preference of simulation or arcade style play. Ever since I can remember first playing this series many years ago friends and I would take shots or check each other after the whistle and NHL 10 finally recognizes this trend by allowing opponents to instigate brawls and penalties when this takes place.
A plethora of new animations have been added to this year’s game from playoff crowds waving towels, players scoring spectacular goals from batting pucks out of mid air or shooting on their knees to the many new goalie animations of incredible saves and desperation lunges. In terms of broadcast presentation little has changed from last year but the play by play is still flawless though I had hoped for a little more new content. The awesome ability to use your own music for in game events like goals thankfully returns.
If I had one ongoing criticism of EA’s series, albeit a small one it would be the lack of heritage teams in the game. NHL features a ton of minor league and European teams that no one seems to want or care about. Perhaps they are included to help international sales but I for one would like to see more of the older teams like the Hartford Whalers, Winnipeg Jets and Atlanta Flames be playable. Adding a Montreal Canadians all star team last year was a nice touch but they re-appear the same in this year’s edition all alone.
This gripe aside, NHL 10 generally builds on the success of last year’s outing continuing to give players the entire package when it comes to a hockey video game. Everything comes together well, the pace, the crowd, and the presentation to really immerse the player in what it must be like to really play in an NHL game.

Review: Halo 3: ODST
Microsoft, Bungie
Available for Xbox 360
This week’s game, Halo 3: ODST was a first for this reviewer as I have never played a first-person shooter genre Halo game in my life (played Halo Wars but that doesn’t count as it’s a real time strategy game). Though I’ve had Halo games in my home because of past boyfriends who played them, I’ve never taken any interest in playing them myself even though I liked the game’s main character, Master Chief and I even liked the game’s musical score. Basically I’m pretty much a Halo virigin.
Halo 3: ODST puts you into the role of an Orbital Drop Shock Trooper or “Helljumper” who has landed in the abandon city of New Mombasa after a failed drop. The city has been occupied by a small Covenant force and it’s up to you to find out what happened to the other missing members of your team. Rather than playing the game out as just your plain old linear story line, the developers set the game up in a series of detective missions where you must find clues around the city in order to move onto a mission where you play out what happened to one of your missing team members.
Of course, amongst the entire clue finding you still get to kill hordes of the covenant that have brought along a new alien type (a passive type that acts as a shield generator) and some new weapons like the Jiralhanae. Now unfortunately for all you veteran Halo fans, the ODSTs are not apparently as tough as Master Chief and tend to need a few more melee hits to take out enemies. Plus they don’t handle the bumps and bruises of war quite as well as Master Chief either, so don’t be afraid to retreat to safer ground when facing tougher enemies that you would normally take head on with the Chief.
Included in the ODST box was a second disc which includes all the available Halo 3 maps you could possible own and while is a great feature for someone like me who doesn’t own Halo 3, Halo fans didn’t seem to be too impressed (what I read online) to purchase a $60 game featuring a 5 hour campaign game, a new online firefight mode that they could only play with friends and a map disc full of stuff they already owned. But taking into consideration that the game does give players access to the Halo Reach beta when it comes out, this whole deal might just be worth the $60 to fans for just the beta access alone.
Being that I’ve never played any Halo games before, this is my first time really looking at the world of Halo closely (I may have looked at it once or twice when the ex-boyfriend played) and I have to say it is darn pretty - like Blade Runner meets the US Army. The world of Halo is very futuristic from the building design to the aliens you fight to the weapons you use. There were a few glitches in the game that caused me to get stuck in a death loop after I jumped on board a banshee and somehow stand on top of a brute’s head which were both pretty darn annoying. This is something that you wouldn’t expect from a game company that has had 4 games to get it right by now.
Based on my Halo newb opinion, I have to say that even though this was a short experience, it was a cool experience for me and I have the urge to check out the previous Halo titles now. I loved playing the main game with my friend as well as the firefight mode and I think this might be the perfect launching game for new Halo players. As for Halo fans, I can’t really say how you would review this game but I can saw that the campaign mode has a engaging storyline and the firefight mode I would assume should be addictive to all, but there’s still that pesky second disc with all the Halo 3 maps. Just try to focus on the Halo Reach beta and maybe you won’t be bothered by the thought of buying stuff you already own.

Little Moogle Costume - HOW ADORABLE!!!!!
[Via Craftster]
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves Trailer
On top of that, the game doesn't take you by the hand and tell you how to solve its many obstacles. For example, one boss like battle I must have died 20 times and after he blew me up, tossed me off the train and so many other ugly things and I finally stopped trying to figure out a strategic way to kill him and just starting hitting him with my fists. Didn't figure it would kill him cause my gun wasn't doing the trick and either was his own grenades, but I hoped it would make me feel better. Amazingly, it did cause the game allowed me to kill him with my fists via a quick time event. Apparently the guy was weak to karate moves but not bullets. Go figure.
All complaining aside about the controls though, this is an amazing game in terms of graphics, storyline and audio. I really can't stop playing this game despite the control issues and as long as I can continue through this game on very easy mode by the skin of my teeth as I have been, I will keep playing no matter how hard it is.
Playstation 3 owners really should pick up with game. I can easily say that this game will be on my Games of the Year list in January.
