Life in a video game: the pros and cons

What if tomorrow morning you woke up and your life was exactly like your favorite video game?

What would you look forward to doing first? Would you drive down the I-90 in your Pontiac Sunfire at 100mph with no regard for traffic laws or your own life, or would you travel cross country killing monsters and rescuing damsels in distress in order to get laid?

Oh the possibilities would be endless, but what about the bad points of living in a video game world? Imagine getting stuck in a rock for an hour because of a glitch in the matrix or being forced to kill a monster every friggn' five minutes just to get to McDonalds for a Big Mac.

Well, hit the jump for a list of the 10 pros and cons of living in a video game world and then you can decide whether it would be worth living in a virtual world.

New Trailer for Resident Evil: UC

OH MY GOD, I WANT THIS GAME!!!!

The newest trailer for Resident Evil: Umbrella Corporation which will be coming out on the Nintendo Wii shows the game from the view of the player and takes you back to the characters and locations of Resident Evil 0 & 1.

I'm already considering selling my old Resident Evil games and buying the Wii collection just to play through them again since I still need a gamecube controller and memory card to play my old games. It seems simplier to buy the new game and sell the old ones instead of forking out $20 or more for the accessories to play the old games.

The Guitar Hero Kid: Wayward Son

The New Golden Boys, the group behind the video series, True Gaming Legends, has created a new video about a Guitar Hero kid that must battle the forces of evil with his fake guitar playing.

[Thanks Eric for the video!]

Brand new gameplay footage from The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass for the Nintendo DS. I am looking forward to this game when it comes out. I plan to buy it the first day it comes out in North America.

Review: Dawn of Mana

Dawn of Mana, the true sequel/prequel to the original Secret of Mana for the Super Nintendo has finally made its way to North American shores and to be honest, it didn't live up to the greatness that is Secret of Mana.

When I first picked up the game, I looked at the back and manual before popping it into my PS2 and from the screenshots and descriptions, the game looked similar to that of the Dark Cloud games with its singular path levels and cartoon like graphics.

The game follows a young man named Keldric as he tries to rescue his friend, Ritzia with the help of his new found friend, Faye the Fairy and his new weapon, a vine sword created from a splinter from the Mana tree that gets stuck in his arm.

Other fairies give you new magic spells through the game but they only last for so long and then they're gone. I prefer if you could have kept the spells and recharged them but you can only recharge Faye's magic which will gain new spells as you level up in each round.

The battle system allows you to use your sword, sling shot or magic against enemies as well as a new panic system which uses the Havok system. The panic system allows you to throw, roll, etc. object to scare your enemies for a few moments in which they will produce medals and power ups when you attack them.

The power ups allow you to build up your character's levels each round but are unfortunately reset at the beginning of each new round. This system was a bit annoying to figure out at first but once the game got going, it becomes second nature to push boulders down the hill first before hack and slashing. I didn't really care about the resetting levels because there isn't much difference in power between levels or maybe there is and I didn't notice.

Each round or chapter, as the game calls them, you have to complete a boss battle which I found each to be hard and lengthy compared to the rest of the game. It took me half an hour to take out the very first boss. THE FIRST BOSS!!! I killed the final form of Sin in FFX quicker than that.

At the end of each round, the game tallies up all your time, how many items you got, objects smashed, etc. and gives you a rated like S, A or B. This is why you don't want to run through the game without employing the panic system for medals. Do so and your rating will be low each round.

The music and the graphics in this game were great and very much like Dragon Quest VIII. Each round had new music and each of the characters spoke so you didn't have to read the text if you didn't want too. The graphics were cartoon like and made for some interesting looking characters.

I liked how designers kept some of the original monsters from Secret of Mana like the cute little yellow bunnies and such. I was annoyed to see another feminine male hero in this game but I understand they're all the rage in Japan these days, so I forgive SquareEnix for that.

All in all, I did like this game but with other games like The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Final Fantasy XII available, I would suggest playing those first and then grabbing this game up afterwards. It wasn't a terrible game nor an unplayable game; I just think there are better RPGs out there and definitely better games from SquareEnix. That's all.

Rating: 6 out of 10

Its time for Gay Pride celebrations this weekend and I just wanted to wish a good time to all my favorite gaymers at GayGamer.net.

Fruit Brute and the boys have always been good to me and I wanted to post a rainbow flag for them. If you haven't already checked out the great site that is GayGamer.net, then do so now.

Fruit Brute has really made a name for the site and adds his two cents at Kotaku.com as well. He pretty much the only thing I like about Kotaku.

Penny Arcade Trailer Two

Penny Arcade Adventures:
On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness

Penny Arcade (www.penny-arcade.com) is the most popular online comic in the world, serving 3.5 million readers monthly. Focused mainly on videogame culture and industry commentary, but managing to skewer a host of mainstream topics along the way, illustrator Mike Krahulik and writer Jerry Holkins deliver colorful humor in a thrice weekly cartoon strip and accompanying blog. The strip regularly features the creator’s alter egos, Tycho and Gabe.

Tycho and Gabe have partnered in true collaborative style with independent developer Hothead Games and are bringing the comic to life in the form of the first-ever Penny Arcade video game, a PC/Mac/Linux computer game called Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness. Consulting on the game’s design is Ron Gilbert, creator of such adventure game classics as The Secret of Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion. The gameplay is a blend of classic adventure and role-playing (RPG) combat elements set in the 1920’s. Penny Arcade Adventures is initially expected to be released in a downloadable, episodic format with the first episode available later this year.

Key game features:

Hilarious, over-the-top dialogue written by Jerry Holkins in a style that will be familiar to Penny Arcade fans.

Canadians might get PS3 Holiday Bundle from Bell Canada this Christmas

Last year Canadians were able to purchase the Xbox 360 Holiday Bundle from Bell Canada at $59.95 a month on a 3 year contract. This bundle included a Wireless Bell Sympatico Network modem, an Xbox 360, 3 games (GRAW, NHL '07 & Xbox Live Vol. 1), 1250 marketplace points and a 3 month Xbox Live Gold subscription.

Well this holiday season, Sony will apparently be teaming up with Bell Canada to provide their own Playstation 3 Holiday Bundle which will work along the same lines at the Xbox 360 bundle payments. The bundle is suppose to include 4 games.

At the moment this bundle is only a rumour but if its true, then Canadians will finally have an affordable way to get their hands on a Playstation 3.

The Ultimate List of Gaming Music

When we talk about video game music, you tend to think the Super Mario Bros. theme, or the Halo intro, etc., but what about the mainstream music dedicated to our favorite past time, video games.

I recently came across this song called Pacman Fever by Buckner and Garcia. It was one of eight songs recorded for their 1981 album of the same name. The Pacman Fever album actually managed to make the Billboard Top 100 with two songs, Pacman Fever and Do the Donkey Kong

Two Worlds. How did I miss this game?

Last night I was looking through the new downloads on the Xbox Marketplace and I noticed a new trailer for a game called Two Worlds. Looking like an Oblivion knock off, Two Worlds allows your character to either save the world or destroy it, which basically is enough for me to want to play this game.

World domination is what I live for. I look forward to seeing more from this game and hope to play it once it comes out.
