Vote for your Favorite Sidekick of all Time!

Truly Sorry that this Webpoll is going up so late, but things have been nuts around here lately and I finally got some down time to post the webpoll.

This time I'm searching for the Top Ten Best Video Game Sidekicks ever and I need your help to find them by voting for your favorites.

The webpoll is located in the right sidebar and will be available for voting for two weeks. Every day you can vote again as I will open the polls each day to allow for multiple votes.

After 2 weeks I'll check the votes and post the top ten sidekicks for viewing.

Usually I post pictures of the nominanees but this time I'll have to do it over the two weeks, because time is limited and blogger isn't posting pictures all the time right now. Beside if you're voting for the sidekick, then you better know who and what they look like anyway.

Anyhoo Good Luck to the winners!

Video Games Live: An Experience for all Gamers.

Only the truly passionate of gamers would get goose bumps when they hear the Super Mario Bros theme mixing into a techno song or the Legend of Zelda theme played on a ukulele. Only the dedicated type of gamer could close his eyes and see his favorite game introduction as he hums the opening theme in time. And only a true gamer could sit in a concert hall and cheer as their favorite video game’s music rises up from the live orchestra and images from the game appear on a giant video screen above. Truly these are the people that Video Games Live was created for.

Created by video game composers, Tommy Tallarico and Jack Wall as the ultimate experience in video game music, Video Games Live is a live concert that mixes video game cinematics, spectacular visual effects and a live orchestra and choir to bring the very best of video game music from throughout the ages. From Pong to Halo, from oldest gamer to youngest gamer, Video Games Live has something for every type of gamer to enjoy. Each show includes a pre-show festival which features a costume contest, Guitar Hero II preview contest, and retro gaming arcade machines which feature games like Frogger and Space invaders to play. Throughout the actual show, there is a space invader contest, and a Frogger contest with prizes for each player to take home. After the show, there is always a meet and greet with local game industry people as well as Jack and Tommy. Official VGL merchandise is also available for purchase before the show, during intermission and after the show.

Gaining on their success, VGL will be putting on their biggest and best show yet at the Hollywood Bowl on September 21st, 2006. The new show will include special guests like Dweezil Zappa, Steve Vai, Julie Stoffer, Tim Schafer, plus many more. The pre-show festival will now include a PC gaming setup provided by Intel, and a gaming contest on six custom built arcade cabinets provided by Dream Authentics and featuring the games, Space Invaders, Centipede, and Asteroids. There will also be a huge meet and greet featuring hundreds of gaming, music and television industry people.

The show itself now will feature an opening act from electronic recording artist Brian “BT” Transeau performing selections from his new album “This Binary Universe.” Legendary guitarists Steve Vai and Dweezil Zappa will be performing along with the orchestra, as well as live electronic drumming by Irwin, and other special appearances by well-known video game composers including Halo composer Marty O'Donnell. New segments include Halo 3 and Civilization IV, plus a rare special acoustic performance by the original LucasArts composers performing Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, and more. There will also be a new Final Fantasy segment that will include the orchestra playing the music of Final Fantasy VII, and Video Game Pianist, Martin Leung will perform his own Final Fantasy arrangement featuring 10 Final Fantasy melodies. Also expect to see new and expanded versions of the game segments Video Games Live has featured in the past which will include new footage and longer music arrangements. There will also be a new interactive contest during the show involving the Goodyear blimp.

Adding to the news of this expanded show, Video Games Live also announced that will be taking its show on the road to places outside of North America. Soon gamers in the United Kingdom, Brazil, Japan and Australia will be able to enjoy the music of Video Games Live. Check out the official Video Games Live website to see when the show will be in your corner of the world.

From personal experience I can tell you that this is truly a show built for gamers. I had the pleasure of attending the Toronto show at Massey Hall back in the beginning of September and I was impressed by what I saw and heard. Sitting in a concert hall with hundreds of gamers screaming and clapping for their favorite video games was an experience like no other. I knew for once that I wasn’t the only person in the building that could hum every Super Mario Bros song or sing the words to the Kingdom Hearts theme.

Every single video game featured in the show was like a trip down memory lane from me as I flooded with the sounds and images of games I had once played and conquered. From Myst to Mario, every composer in the game industry was given a chance to shine as most of the time American composers are forgotten about when people tend to think about great video game themes. This show included them all. I have to say the best part of the show came from Video Game pianist, Martin Leung who not only wowed the audience with his unique Final Fantasy arrangement, and but also performed the music of Super Mario Bros. with a blind fold on. His super fast fingers pumped out the music of Earthworm Jim, Tetris, Mario and Final Fantasy so fast that even the live video screen feed had trouble keeping up with him.

There were only two things I would have changed about the show which were the Medal of Honor segment and the Kingdom Hearts segment as both did not include footage from the games. Medal of Honor had footage from the actual world wars and though it was heart felt, I kind of found it boring. Kingdom Hearts had footage from Disney movies and being such a huge Kingdom Hearts fan I was disappointed to not see Sora, Donald and Goofy on the screen. KH is such a beautiful game with amazing cut scenes and I would have rather of seen the game footage then bits of Disney movies.

The show lasted only around 2 hours but it seemed to just fly by. By the end of the show, I knew that I and those around me enjoyed every minute and would easily return again to see the show next year.

From the over all experience, I have to say what really impressed me the most about show was the dedication of those involved and the realization that Video Games Live wouldn’t exist without the hard work and love each of the people involved. I had the chance to talk to Tommy Tallarico and Jack Wall after the show, and what they told me gave me a new respect of what they were trying to accomplish. Though there were sponsors that provided prizes for the games and such, Tommy and Jack took a chance on each show’s success at selling tickets when they booked each venue, because they were the ones fronting the money for the show. Not the sponsors and not the venue. It was at that moment, I realized Video Games Live was created by two guys that just loved music and video games so much that they had to share it with the world and it wasn’t created as some corporation’s idea to sell more games.

What also impressed the heck out of me was the spunky little marketing coordinator for VGL, Becky Young, who ran the costume contest and spend hours after the show talking to every attendee to get their opinions on the evening. To spend that much time finding out the good and the bad points of the show in hopes of perfecting it is true dedication on her part. I am lucky enough to call Becky my friend now and I know the VGL is lucky to have her as a part of the team.

I would just like to thank Tommy, Jack, and Becky for an insider view into the lives of the people of VGL. Knowing who all of you are and what you’re all about makes the show that much more incredible. I would also like to thank the VGL crew for the free swag and for a cool experience. I don’t think you’ll ever realize how much you three made my weekend. Thanks again.

For more information on the show, tour dates, and ticket sales, check out the official Video Games Live website.

Ladies, Wanna Play With My Wii?

Nintendo has gone on record saying that they hope that with a small price tag of $249.99 and several easy to play games like Wii Sports that more women of all ages will be interested in buying the Nintendo Wii.

They plan to market the console to women, the elderly and generally those who don't want a console in their living room. They hope with the success of introducing the Nintendo DS to a market of casual gamers and non gamer with games like Brain Age and Nintendogs, that the Wii will have the same appeal with its easy to use remote.

Honestly I think Nintendo has always appeal to women because of its tendence to have cutsie or simulation games which women tend to prefer over first person shooters. I'm not saying we don't play all types of games, but I will admit I bought my gamecube originally to play Zelda titles, Pikmin, Mario titles, Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon, etc. I did pick up the Resident Evil series, but it wasn't an original thought.

As for non-gamers and the elderly, I don't see them picking up this system, because handhelds are usually purchased for easy use, up close play, and casual playing purposes and most people don't think of those things when they think consoles. Maybe I'll be proven wrong, but I think Nintendo will find their profit in women gamers, retro gamers wanting the virtual console games, and previous Nintendo fans that decide Wii is cool enough to return to their roots.

Zack Kim jams out Mario on two guitars

Zack Kim pulls off a sweet double guitar rendition of the Super Mario Bros. theme in this amazing video. This guy can play two guitars at the same time, and heck I'm lucky if I can pat my head and rub my stomach at the same time. Geez, I'd be really happy if I could rub two body parts at the same. That would be nice ... Sorry where was I?

Check out Zack's website to see him play more double guitar tunes.

Jack Thompson Starts Already.

This was posted on a Joystiq.com comment field under the article, "Wii Not Supporting DVD Playback."

KISS THE VIOLENT VIDEO GAME INDUSTRY BYE-BYE:

Immediate News Release – 9/14/06

Montreal School Shooter Trained for Massacre on Two Violent Video Games

Dawson College student Kimveer Gill apparently literally trained on his two favorite murder simulation video games to go on his college shooting spree, just as did Klebold and Harris at Columbine High.

The two games, according to Gill’s own web site, are Postal and Super Columbine Massacre.

Miami attorney and anti-violent video game activist over a year ago challenged the maker of Postal, Vince Desi at Running with Scissors in Tucson, Arizona, to publicly debate whether or not his company should continue marketing Postal. Thompson predicted that it might lead to a mass killing, as a mass knife assault in Russia had been linked to Postal. Desi refused. Desi is now likely to have his company named in a wrongful death action in Canada:

LINK

Even more remarkably, Thompson last year appeared on CBS’s 60 Minutes regarding a wrongful death case that he and his co-counsel filed in Alabama on behalf of the families of three cops slain by a teen who trained on Grand Theft Auto: Vice City to kill. The video game training of the Alabama killer became known when he was quoted as saying: “Life is like a video game. You have to die sometime.” Kimveer Gill, the Montreal massacrist, is quoted saying precisely the same thing, while enthusing about his play on violent video games:

LINK

The massacre in Montreal is simply the latest tragedy of mass killing linked to violent virtual reality murder simulators. The worst is yet to come. Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc., is set to release on October 17 the game Bully, which in every sense is a Columbine simulator.

And this was quoted in an article from Gamespot.com

Florida lawyer Jack Thompson wasted little time in linking the tragedy to his ongoing attempts to have violent games curbed. In an e-mail sent to various press outlets with the subject heading "Jack Thompson Right Again," the lawyer said the shooter "literally trained on his two favorite murder simulation video games to go on his college shooting spree..."

"The massacre in Montreal is simply the latest tragedy of mass killing linked to violent virtual reality murder simulators," Thompson wrote. "The worst is yet to come. Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc., is set to release on October 17 the game Bully, which in every sense is a Columbine simulator."

Video Games? Always a Scape Goat.

Yesterday was a dark day in video games, as 25 year old Gamer and Goth; Kimveer Gill walked onto Dawson college grounds and began to open fire on the college students. Leaving behind a blog full of references to video games, it will be only a matter of time before the righteous people of the world use this as another point in their crusade against the evil of violent video games and how they are the cause of violence acts such as this.

At around 1pm yesterday at Dawson College in Montreal, Canada, Gill walked into his school with a rifle and proceeded to kill one woman and injure 19 others. Police brought the killing spree to an end when they finally shot and killed Gill. With little or no explanation for the occurrence, the media has turned their sights on his online journal posted on vampirefreaks.com in hopes to find something to blame for his violent act and so far they are making sure to include everything that could be linked as a reason for his violent behavior including heavy metal music, video games, and gothic culture. They make references to quotes from his page like:

“Wish they make Postal 3, like really really good. Postal 2 Share the Pain was o.k. but too childish, i want them to make a game so realistic, that it looks and feels like it's actually happening. Perhaps when they come out with Postal 4 (If they ever do)”

“Life is like a video game, you gotta die sometime.”

They make sure to list all his favorite video games, and musicians and the fact that he enjoyed gruesome horror films.

Funny how no one seems to care about the fact that one: this guy writes two posts about how he hates bullies and how no one will put a stop to the bullying, which provides the real reason this kid went postal and two: how did this guy end up owning weapons in the first place. If you sit and actually read this guy’s blog, he was obviously a disturbed individual and was in need of some serious help. How could his friends and family not see that he needed help? I guess it’s just easier to point the blame on the games he played, the website he wrote on or the music he listened to.

The reality is that no music lyric or video game teaches you how to kill. Last time I checked using a game controller doesn’t train you how to shoot a rifle and loading a disc into a CD player isn’t the same as loading a gun. How long will it be before society sees that the real people to look to are those around this guy that failed to help him before this tragedy occurred? Where were his parents, his friends and his teachers when obviously this guy had some serious hate issues? Those are the people that should be interviewed, instead of the webmaster of vampirefreaks.com.

When is the world going to wake up and realize there isn’t one simple answer to the reasons behind violence?

I would just like to add that my heart goes out to the students who were killed or injured in this terrible event and their families. My hopes and prayers are with you always.

GAME INDUSTRY'S 100 MOST INFLUENTIAL WOMEN

Next Generation.com has created a top one hundred list of the game industry's most influential women and though I am happy to see women in the industry being recognized for their efforts in the gaming industry, I gotta say there are some names in the list that maybe shouldn't be in there.

When I did my industry list of hot guys, I had hundreds of comments saying that journalists weren't not included in the gaming industry, because they didn't contribute to the process of games. Well I count several website owners, journalists and marketing coordinators on this list and somehow I don't think they have anything to do with creating games. So... where's the uproar? Where are the thousands of screaming industry people that are enraged over these people that shouldn't be on the list? Or perhaps people who should be on the list? I've counted only 13 comments on Joystiq.com, and 4 on Kotaku.com. Heck, I got more comments than that.

I'm not saying either way whether the list is good or not, because I think anyone who adds to the gaming industry is valuable, but I'm just surprised people aren't freaking out.

At least someone spoke out about the lack of some names on the list: Jason Della Rocca added a few names to the list that he thinks should have been on there. Check it out here.

Two Great Impressions Videos

You Tube Note:

Ok, here it is! The greatest impression video of all time, I challenge anyone else to match it! I have done 48-50 impressions in less than 10 minutes. And I think they are pretty decent impressions as well. Well, you'll just have to watch and see.

Basically I've been seeing some impression videos lately being featured on YouTube, and I thought Artie's was pretty good but the other one featured recently sucked and made me want to showcase how real impressions are done. Anyway, they're not all spot on but pretty close. Enjoy!

YouTube cut off the tail end of this video which listed all the impressions in order of appearance, so here they are for you curious ones.

Thank You for All the Kind Words

I would just like to take a moment to thank everyone that has taken the time to send me a kind word and their condolences this week. The passing of my father has been really hard on my family and I and all your kind words have helped me greatly through all of this.

I would really like to thank Neiro and the Destructoid boys for the lovely flowers they sent to the funeral home; they've only known me for only a few short months and they've treated me like they've known me. Thank you. My family was very appreciative of the flowers and the kind words.

Anyone who would like to make a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society, they can click the link to the site on the sidebar. I thank everyone in advance for any donation they can give. I truly hope someday that we will never have to see another family member or friend suffer at the hands of such a terrible disease. It took a good man that will truly be missed by many.

Thank you again for all the support you've shown me.

Marching to their own 8 bit tune

Famous Maroon Marching Band plays video game music during their half time show. Themes from Halo, Legend of Zelda, Mortal Kombat and Super Mario Bros. are played while the band forms several symbols in the field such as a mushroom, a triforce and a halo symbol.

Not as cool as VGL, but still pretty neat for a marching band. Band Geeks Rule!

Jessica and Kevin - Faith and Tommy

One of my readers and fellow Destructoid.com writer, Walter Crespo sent me this picture from a recent photo shoot for the new magazine, Geek Weekly.

Jessica Chobot from IGN.com and #6 Kevin Pereira from Attack of the Show are showing off their sexy new clothes in a spread for the magazine. It's nice and I would envy Jessica had I not had my own little picture to show off.

Here's my picture with my #1, Tommy Tallerico, Jack Wall (Composer), and Julian Spillane (Chair of the Toronto Independent Games Conference and Software Develvoper).

I may not have anyone grabbing my butt, but three guys surrounding me on a couch is good enough for me. :)

It would have been better with Becky Young on my lap. LOL

I'll post about my geek weekend soon.

A Grey Day

While the world is mourning the lose of Steve Irwin, the famous
Crocidile hunter, I have to deal with my own loss today.

Early morning sometime before 5:00am, my father, Bradley Winterburn
passed away after a year and half battle with cancer. Even with all
the kemo and radiation treatments, the doctors managed to only length
his time here on earth with us, and though our family mourns his lose,
we know that he is finally at peace and in a place that he will no
longer suffer.

In the end, my father was no longer the person I knew him to be and it
was good that god took him quickly. Though we never wish death upon
anyone sometimes it a better fate then a life of suffering.

My Dad was a very loved man as I saw by all the people that came to
visit with him in the last days. Both his family, friends and
co-workers will all mourn the loss of my father, but will also I'm
sure be glad to have known him.

At this time, I am not sure of the funeral date, but it will probably
be in the next day or two. I will not be able to post anything on my
blogs in the next few days and I hope that you will understand.

My Dad was a good man and I know he will be missed.

Sincerely
Tina
