We're Popular....

In attempts to get my Ten Top List some attention, I've been going around to different gaming sites trying to get the list published. So far I've only got two sites to publish the list, but I've also noticed some other places the list is popping up.

www.aeropause.com is the one site I managed to get the list published on, and I appreciate all the traffic they have been sending my way.

www.digg.com is another site I posted the list link on and have managed to get a few link clicks from.

I'd like to thank the KTEB ladies over at The Sanitarium for posting a link to the list. Long Live Kurtis Trent!

Heimdallr from My Space posted a bulletin for the list and I'd like to thank him for the notice. He's making my top 8 friends list, if he ever approves me.

European gamers apparently like the list because http://games.shizzle.be posted the list.

I'd also like to thank all the bloggers over at Girl Gamers that posted on their own sites about the list. You made this list and promoted it for me. Thank you for all your efforts.

Finally I'd like to thank Kotaku, the Gamer’s Guide, though the writer of the post put down the list calling it a, and I quote, "a more milktoast m'elange of "..."-spouting yaoi fodder", I still appreciate all the hundreds of links they're sending me. Guess even bad publicity is good.

UPDATED: www.destructoid.com added the list as an article. Thanks Mr. Destructoid!

Also the list was added as a link on the Team Xbox forums. The guys were too happy with the results.

Hopefully I can find more sites to get a link to the list posted. Sprend the word, Ladies. Prove the guys that run those sites, that women gamers are interested in this list.

Microsoft can't stop copying us - Sony boss

"I wish they'd come up with strategies of their own."

In an interview published in the latest Official PlayStation Magazine, SCEA boss Kaz Hirai has gone on the offensive again, this time accusing Microsoft of copying Sony's ideas. "Every time we go down a path, we look behind and [Microsoft is] right there - we just can't shake these guys," harrumphed Hirai. "I wish that they would come up with some strategies of their own, but they seem to be going down the path of everything we do."

Hirai was equally unimpressed with Microsoft's decision to launch a HD-DVD drive as an optional extra. "You're not going to be asking me, 'So, talk to me about this Blu-Ray add-on that you have. Does it work for games? Is it just for movies?' That's exactly the kind of pitfall you fall into if you launch something that's too early, too premature..." he said.

Hirai's accusations may well be viewed with slight cynicism in some quarters, however - Sony has been accused of copying competitors in the past, with the motion-sensing PS3 controller allegedly influenced by Nintendo's Wii remote controller. Meanwhile, the very existence of Xbox Live Marketplace and Microsoft's launch strategy of bringing out two versions of the Xbox 360 (a move that is to be mirrored by Sony when the PS3 launches) hardly helps Hirai's argument.

PS3 + Games = Arm + Leg?

PS3A big question in the next-gen console race has been - with development costs soaring and games getting progressively more complex, how much is this all going to cost after all? Well, there’s hints of some bad news from Kaz Hirai (speaking in the latest PSM magazine) for everyone saving up for a Playstation 3:

“generally speaking, over the past twelve years or so, there has been a consumer expectation that disc-based games are maybe $59 on the high end to $39 on the low end. So, what I can say now is, I think it would be a bit of a stretch to think that we could suddenly turn around and say ‘PS3 Games now $99.99.’”

He then continues:

“I don’t think consumers expect software pricing to suddenly double. So, the quick answer is that we want to make it as affordable as possible, knowing that there is a set consumer expectation for what software has cost for the past twelve years. That’s kind of the best answer I can give you. So, if it becomes a bit higher than $59, don’t ding me, but, again, I don’t expect it to be $100.”

So let’s see what’s really said here - Sony is basically going to take the fact that consumers have an expectation of a ~$59 price point into account, but in the end they’ll make it as affordable “as possible”? That sounds suspiciously like the logic behind the pricing for the PS3 console, which may not be a good thing. If Sony has to convince us that there’s a good reason to pay more for their games as well as their console, they may have a long battle ahead of them (especially with many of their formerly exclusive titles rumored to appear on other systems - Assassin’s Creed for one, or GTA 4).

We’ll definitely be listening closely when the final games pricing structure releases.

Howard Stringer is a risk taker

PS3 High Price"The price of the PS3 is high... But you’re paying for potential," sayeth Howard Stringer, CEO of Sony Corp. It's not unlike the strategy that a person on a corner selling narcotics might employ; you get what you pay for. And the PlayStation 3 has the most potential of them all.

Sony has taken a large risk, but they feel it's doing to pay off in massive profits when all is said and done. "Obviously, it’s a higher-risk strategy as all new inventions are. But if the PS3 lives up to its total potential, then I don’t think anyone will be worried about Nintendo or Xbox’s cheaper price," Stringer confidently announced at a recent press conference.

When speaking of PS3's Blu-ray capability he went on to ask, "When you bring into new technology, do you go for a cheaper transitional [product], or do you take a chance on future-proof, higher technology which will keep you going for many, many years?"

On the other hand, one can say that Microsoft is also "future proofing" the Xbox 360 by offering an optional HD-DVD player. But don't tell that to Sony without expecting to get socked in the mouth.

Moore hints at plans for new Xbox 360 controller

Ellie Gibson 15:34 28/06/2006

"We've got to bring more people in," says MS exec

Xbox boss Peter Moore has hinted that Microsoft could be working on a simplified game controller designed to attract new gamers who might be intimidated by traditional joypads.

At a recent EA Community Event, Moore said the company is looking at "Any way that we can play and make games easier and more intuitive, that takes the intimidation factor away from what is a pretty complex device now when you look at the controller."

"Shoulder buttons, triggers, analog sticks, d-pads - I mean, there's a lot going on there."

Compare it to the old Atari 2600 joystick, Moore suggested - which "Everybody could pick up and have some fun with. Clearly I think the Wii is trying to get back to those days, although when I picked it up I was surprised how much stuff is on there, and it took me a little while even then to get going on those things."

But, as he's previously stated many times, Moore is a big fan of the Wii - and, he added, of "any innovation you can try and do that will make it a broader reach for games, because as an industry we've got to do that - we've got to bring more people in."

Moore went on to explain that his 14 year-old daughter loves racing games, particularly Project Gotham Racing, but "She's frustrated because the button configurations, the use of triggers... She just doesn't like it".

So is Microsoft looking for a solution to the problem of overly-complex controllers? Well, "We're doing a lot of stuff there," Moore said - but "Nothing that we're ready to talk about".

He went on to say that Microsoft is "not going to force anything that is not going to be intuitive and innovative" - which could suggest that the company is unlikely to follow in Sony and Nintendo's footsteps by producing a motion-sensing controller.

Video Game Industry Sues to Overturn Unconstitutional Oklahoma Video Game Law, the Entertainment Software Association Announces

Business Wire (June 23, 2006)

WASHINGTON, Jun 23, 2006 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- The computer and video game industry filed suit today in Oklahoma, asking that the state's new video game law be overturned, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) announced. Similar laws have been ruled as unconstitutional by six federal courts in five years, all rejecting the unpersuasive claims made by states that violent video games cause aggression.

"Legislators have sold parents a bill of goods for political expediency," said Doug Lowenstein, president of the ESA, the trade group representing U.S. computer and video game publishers. "They know the bill will be struck down, they know it's based on bad science, and they know it won't help parents do their jobs. What they won't tell voters: we just picked your pocket to the tune of a half million dollars, the amount the state will have to reimburse the ESA after the inevitable decision is made to strike down the law."

The law criminalizes the sale or distribution of violent video games to minors, even by their own parents. By subjecting a parent to criminal liability for providing a video game to their child, the state of Oklahoma is the first in the country to pass a law that takes the unprecedented step of telling parents that the government knows better than they what games their children should play.

"Parents, not local police offices, should decide what games are suitable for their children," said Lowenstein. "We stand ready to work with parents to provide them with information about the Entertainment Software Ratings system, which has been called the most comprehensive rating system for any entertainment medium in the country, in order to help parents make informed choices about the games their children play."

"The law's definitions are so vague and imprecise that no video game retailer could ever know whether a particular video game is covered by the restrictions," said Bo Andersen, president of the Entertainment Merchants Association, the not-for-profit international trade association for the retailers and distributors of console and computer video games and DVDs. "No retail clerk should suffer the ignominy of a criminal record where no reasonable person could determine whether a particular video game may legally be sold or rented to a minor."

Lowenstein said the ESA is disappointed that the legislature opted to enact the bill rather than pursue constitutional and effective ways to work cooperatively with industry, retailers, government, parent groups, and health groups to educate parents about the ESRB ratings and content descriptors and the parental controls available in all next generation consoles.

The ESA is the U.S. association dedicated to serving the business and public affairs needs of the companies publishing interactive games for video game consoles, handheld devices, personal computers, and the Internet. ESA members collectively account for more than 90 percent of the $7 billion in entertainment software sales in the U.S. in 2005, and billions more in export sales of entertainment software. For more information about the ESA, please visit www.theESA.com.

Confirmed: No Xbox 360 Price Cut This Fall

Microsoft representative today broke the company's own copy/paste statement about "Microsoft does not comment on rumors and speculation." How so? By Xbox marketer John Porcano saying on his blog that no price drop is headed for the Xbox 360 this holiday season.

"As you're all aware, there have been rumors of a price drop for the Xbox 360 coming along later this year. The official word from folks in the know is that there are currently no plans for a price drop this fall."

For the record, Porcano bolded those words, not us.

So for all those gamers who were hoping for an Xbox 360 price cut, we hate to inform you that your hopes have been dashed. At least for this holiday season.

BANNED: Australian gamers to miss out on Eidos’ Reservoir Dogs game

Written by Dan Chiappini

Australia’s censor has banned the upcoming Reservoir Dogs game, announced just a little over a month ago by Eidos for Xbox, PlayStation 2 and PC.

Atari, the Australian distributor of EIDOS’ major upcoming release, has had the title scrapped after being refused classification by the Office of Film & Literature Classification (OFLC).

The ban comes after Atari’s application failed to comply with the strict categorisation guidelines into one of the four available standards (G, PG, M, MA15+) currently available.

Since Australia still has no restricted R18+ category for video games, Reservoir Dogs has therefore become unclassifiable and the title made illegal for sale or rental in Australia with strict fines and jail time available for merchants running the risk.

The decision follows closely on the heals of the denial of entry to Mark Ecko’s Getting up: Contents Under Pressure earlier this year and will no doubt be met with anger by the same game-going public who anxiously awaited its release.

Developed by Blitz Games (the company responsible for such wholesome titles as SpongeBob Square Pants: Creature from the Krusty Krab and Pac-Man World 3), the title was to closely mirror the 1992 cult classic movie of the same name and follows a diamond heist and the bloody carnage that ensues when it all goes wrong.

According to an Atari release about the game sent out last month it was also to try and develop additional plotlines from the movie including the mysterious whereabouts of Mr Blue and Mr Brown as well as clear up questions about what happened to Mr Pink and the missing diamonds.

Despite the movie carrying a restricted R18+ rating for movie rental and purchase, the OFLC has no equivalent classification for video games.

While Mark Ecko’s Getting Up was a game which The OFLC thought promoted vandalism and teen delinquency, from the looks of it, it’s a fair assumption that Reservoir Dogs appears to have been canned for all out glorification of violence.

Ironically enough, you can go out today and buy the live-action movie on DVD without any questions being asked, but if you’d like to continue the adventure into the virtual world then you’re out of luck.

When asked if Atari planned to resubmit an amended version of the game for reclassification, PR and Promotions Manager David Wildgoose simply replied with “That’s the end of the matter.”

An OFLC representative was unavailable to comment at the time of writing, but we’ll update as soon as more information comes to light.

10 – Solid Snake: This hunky clone first appeared in 1987 in Metal Gear as a rookie solider working for an organization called Foxhound. After appearing in 6 more Metal Gear games, Snake has snuck his way into our lady gamer hearts with his bad ass attitude and tortured past. When you think about it, Snake is the perfect man; he’s quiet, he follows orders, he’s willing to eat anything and if he dies, you can just clone him again. Perfect, really!

Games – Metal Gear, Metal Gear: Snake’s Revenge, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Metal Gear Solid: Integral, Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, The Document of Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistance, and Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel.

9 – Sir Auron: Older can be sexy! Auron first appeared in Final Fantasy X as the mysterious guide to a young Tidus. Even though his arm was damaged in a pervious fight, Auron has still able to swing his big ass sword and impress the hell out of us. Auron is another case of a man with a mysterious, tortured past that makes you just want to hold him forever. Poor Auron, I’ll make it all better.

Games – Final Fantasy X, and Kingdom Hearts 2

8 – Kurtis Trent: This pixilated hottie first appeared in Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness as the ex-Legionnaire and adventurer that joins forces with Lara Croft to combat the Cabal and Eckhardt. Though some people weren’t too thrilled with having to play this male character as opposed to just Lara in the game, he still managed to raid our hearts. This hunky brunette is so popular, he even has his own online fan club called Kurtis Trent Estrogen Brigade, or KTEB for short, which is the reason I think Kurtis sits in this top ten list. Kurtis thanks his fan for the support! Their website can be found here at The Sanitarium.

Games – Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness

7 – Vincent Valentine: This dark and mysterious character was a bonus character found in the Final Fantasy VII. Vincent also makes an appearance in the movie, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, where we really get to see him in all his CGI glory and damn does he look good. Vincent’s history is a little sketchy, but I far as I could figure he was a member of The Turks, before he was tragically turned into another of Shinra’s human experiments, but as usual we, ladies, love the guy’s with the tragic past and with a lost love mixed in with Vincent’s past, we really can’t resist this dark haired handsome.

Games – Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus, Before Crisis and Ehrgeiz.

6 - Cloud: Okay, so Final Fantasy VII didn’t have the best graphics to justify Cloud as a hottie; I mean how can you get turned on by a guy with blocks for hands, and a huge spiky hair cut, but the newest version of Cloud in Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is a definite hottie and reminds us why we fell in love with Cloud in the first place. Dark and dangerous heroes will a mysterious past will always grab the attention of the ladies. Plus you gotta love a guy who carries a huge ass sword.

Games – Final Fantasy VII, Last Order: Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus, Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2, Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, Final Fantasy Tactics, Itadaki Street Special, Chocobo Racing, Ehrgeiz, and Final Fantasy Technical Demo for PS3 (Rumor has it: PS3 will have a remake of Final Fantasy VII.).

5 – Sephiroth: This naughty boy first appeared in Final Fantasy VII as the evil white haired hottie that our heroes must stop from destroying the world. Seen as perhaps the best video game villain of all time, you can’t dispute the fact that Sephiroth is a totally hottie and even though he’s killed lots of people and made a lot of video gamers cry (AERITH! NO!), we can’t help but love him and his evil ways. Sephiroth makes an appearance in several other games, but he looks the best in the new movie, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, where he is resurrected sporting a new pair of badass wings. What is it that makes a set of wings so hot?

Games – Final Fantasy VII, Kingdom Hearts 1 &

2, Before Crisis, Itadaki Street Special, Last Order: Final Fantasy VII, and in a new game for the PSP, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.

4 – Squall Leonhart: Another Final Fantasy hottie on this list! What is it with our obsession with feminine men? Never mind. This wavy brown haired hottie first appeared in Final Fantasy VIII has the first graphically good-looking hero in the Final Fantasy series. Squall, sometimes known as Leon, is a student at Balamb Garden, a military academy, where he is pulled into a battle for the world against the Galbadian army and their leader, the Sorceress Edea. Squall, like most heros is moody, and pushes others away from him. Ladies, we all love a challenge and that is why the hunkie Squall is on our list.

Games – Final Fantasy VIII, and Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2

3 – Dante: Another white haired bad ass, Dante first appeared in Devil May Cry, where he plays a devil/human that must save the world from the return of Mundus, the Emperor of Demons. This is another example of a pastless hero that has worked his way into our hearts. Best of all, he has a twin brother, Virgil, and who doesn’t like the thought of twins. Dante returns for 2 amazing sequels and continues to make us swoon.

Games – Devil May Cry 1, 2 & 3, Viewtiful Joe Red Hot Rumble, Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne Maniacs (Director's Cut), Viewtiful Joe (PlayStation 2 version only), and Capcom Fighting Evolution.

2 – Link:
Though Link has appeared in many different incarnations in his games, we all know that this is Hyrule hero will always be the same at heart. First appearing in the 1986 game, The Legend of Zelda, Link has won us over with his tireless efforts to always save Princess Zelda, no matter the time or place. With so many Playstation and Xbox heros dominating this list, it was nice to see one Nintendo hero make it on here. I believe Link was the first video game heart throb and he will always bring us back for more.

Games – The Legend of Zelda, Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link, The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, The Legend of Zelda: Majoria’s Mask, The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons, The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages, The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Super Smash Bros. Melee.

1- Leon S. Kennedy:
This hunk first appeared in Resident Evil 2 as a Raccoon City Police Officer trying to survive the zombie attack and escape the city before it gets nuked. He later made another appearance as the hero hired to rescue the president’s daughter in Resident Evil 4.This hunk has it all: martial art skills, firearm training and a cool bomber jacket.Plus you gotta love a man who knows how to take out a zombie in one shot.

Games – Resident Evil 2, 4 and a non-continuity spin-off, Resident Evil Gaiden
