Howard Stringer is a risk taker

PS3 High Price"The price of the PS3 is high... But you’re paying for potential," sayeth Howard Stringer, CEO of Sony Corp. It's not unlike the strategy that a person on a corner selling narcotics might employ; you get what you pay for. And the PlayStation 3 has the most potential of them all.

Sony has taken a large risk, but they feel it's doing to pay off in massive profits when all is said and done. "Obviously, it’s a higher-risk strategy as all new inventions are. But if the PS3 lives up to its total potential, then I don’t think anyone will be worried about Nintendo or Xbox’s cheaper price," Stringer confidently announced at a recent press conference.

When speaking of PS3's Blu-ray capability he went on to ask, "When you bring into new technology, do you go for a cheaper transitional [product], or do you take a chance on future-proof, higher technology which will keep you going for many, many years?"

On the other hand, one can say that Microsoft is also "future proofing" the Xbox 360 by offering an optional HD-DVD player. But don't tell that to Sony without expecting to get socked in the mouth.
