Review: Singstar PS3

[Editor's Note: While I could post my usual gameplay and trailer videos from Gametrailers.com for this review, I decided instead to show off a Singstar video that includes a favorite IGN blogger of mine, Ottsel. This video shows off how you're really suppose to play Singstar. Enjoy!]

Singstar
SCEA, SCEA London Studio
Available for the Playstation 3

Now I most cases I wouldn’t buy a karaoke game, but somehow I let that little voice that usually tells me to sing in the shower, talk me into buying a copy of Singstar for the Playstation 3, and boy, are my neighbours hating me right now. See though I have regretted every karaoke session I have been ever been involved in, I still love to sing, and buying Singstar still allows me to rock out and avoid embarrassing nights out at the bar with my friends . Win/win situation, right?

SingStar for the Playstation 3 is the newest instalment in the series which includes the ideal karaoke songs people love belting out in bars like Weezer’s “Buddy Holly,” OutKast’s “Hey Ya!” and MC Hammer’s “U Can’t Touch This”. You can choose from old school 80s tunes like “Let’s Dance” by David Bowie or something newer from artists like Amy Whinehouse. There’s something for everyone in the game’s line up of 30 rock, pop and rap songs.

Besides having broader appeal, SingStar is the best of best when it comes to singing games because it includes actual music videos in the background. As you sing the lyrics and match pitch bars in the foreground, the slick interface shows Hammer busting moves in his genie pants, Mick Jagger strutting his stuff and Amy Whinehouse trying to avoid rehab. It may also give you a chance to see videos from older stars like David Bowie which you may never have seen before.

Solo modes and practice modes have you singing your songs which trying to match your pitch and lyrics to bars that scroll by. You have to do this perfectly to get a good score and don’t even try humming if you forget the words; the game picks up on cheaters. Multiplayer modes include pass the mic which plays you against a friend to see who sings a song better and duet mode has you singing a song together in perfect harmony. How sweet! Both modes work well for more than two people, so don’t be afraid to invite a bunch of friends over and play some Singstar drunk.

While the 30 song list may keep some people busy for a while, the serious karaoke fans will want more songs to choose from and that’s where the online Sing Store comes in. Gamers can go online and purchase songs from different artists for only $1.49 and add them to their Singstar library. The list is a pretty decent size right now and Sony plans to keep add songs as time goes by. Singstar fans will probably love this feature because it will save them from having the run around looking for the different editions of the game like they did before on the old PS2 system.

Probably the best part about the new design of Singstar for the PS3 is the online community where gamers can use the Eye Toy to record 30 second clips of themselves and friends singing or lip-syncing to their favourite songs and post them on the online community page for everyone to watch and rate. So far the community is only available through the Singstar game, but I really hope Sony allows internet access soon, because there is some funny stuff on there.

There are videos of guys singing Pussycat Dolls, storm troopers singing MC Hammer tunes and puppets singing Elvis. The people of internet have to see this stuff.

Singstar is one of those games that great to pull out when company comes over and the booze has been flowing for a while. The Playstation 3 doesn’t have a lot of good party games yet, and Singstar fills the void perfectly. It’s great for everyone in the family to play and best of all, you can secret record your friends who don’t know what the Eye Toy is and post it in the online community later for them to see when they’re sober.

Blizzard.com Reveals Diablo III

Big News, Diablo fans!

The mysterious frozen screens that have been haunting us on Blizzard.com turned out not to be a lead into the World of Warcraft: Wraith of the Lich King expansion, but instead an announcement that Blizzard has been working on a third installment for the Diablo franchise. SWEETNESS!!!!!

I am a huge fan of the original Diablo game and still own a copy to this day even though I can't get the darn thing to work on my computer without the audio messing up.

Along with Blizzard's big trailer announcement of Diablo III at their 2008 Worldwide Invitational, there has also been screenshots, character class & world information, Cain's Journal, an audio telling of the events from previous Diablo games, and gameplay videos, all released on the Diablo III website. Talk about a feast for Diablo fans.

Coldplay and Creaky Boards Stole from Legend of Zelda

The big story on You Tube last week was the video posted by Andrew, the front man for the band, Creaky boards, where he claims Coldplay's melody for "Viva la Vida" was stole from their song, "The Songs I didn't Write" (What an ironic name).

Well, Andrew claims he was inspired by the Fairy Theme from The Legend of Zelda, and guess what? So did Chris Martin. How interesting!

So I guess that means that Andrew and Chris really stole their melodies from Nintendo. I've posted the Fairy Theme Music above, so everyone can compare the songs together and decide if they truly do sound alike. I sort of hear the similiarities, but not as much as I do between the Creaky Boards song and the Coldplay song. Those songs are just too much alike to be a coincidence.

New Chocobo's Dungeon Gameplay Footage

New Dissidia: Final Fantasy Trailer

A new Japanese trailer has come out for Square Enix's Dissidia: Final Fantasy for the PSP. This fighting will include characters from all the Final Fantasy games. The trailer confirms characters like Squall, Sephiroth, Tidus, Zidane, Kuja, Edea, and a few other characters I can't indentify yet.

The cutscenes look pretty damn amazing for a PSP game and though I'm not a huge fighting game fan, I know I'll be checking this game out when it hits store shelves in the future.

Review: Boom Blox

Boom Blox
Electronic Arts, EA LA
Available now for the Nintendo Wii

When Steven Spielberg creates a game you expect something big and epic like his movies, but don’t let the cute and simple concept of Boom Blox, the newest game from Electronic Arts, make you think that one of world’s greatest directors has gone and lost his touch, because this game will have you addicted in no time.

A little bit Jenga and a little bit physics project, Boom Blox is something the gaming world has never seen before, which is something the gaming industry needs more of this days. Spielberg took a chance on creating a game with a completely new concept and thankfully for him, it worked out really well.

Boom Blox has several different game objections throughout, but generally main object of the game is to collapse stacks of blocks by throwing balls at them. Sound pretty easy, right? Not when you take into consideration real world physics and all the variables the designers throw in each stage. This game could have you playing one stage over and over again just trying to achieve the perfect outcome to reach a gold goal.

The game introduces different kinds of blocks throughout the game, that each has a unique reaction to help you topple the tower of blocks. You also get different balls to throw, enemies to take out and new goals to complete as the stages progress that will change how you go about finishing a stage. For example, you may need to pull blocks out of the tower formation, but you can’t let the critter on top of the tower fall off, so ultimately you can‘t let the tower fall.

The different modes in the game allow you to check out the different block types and tools at your own pace. The adventure story mode has you playing through stages with a story to follow, explore mode allows you to play stages with only one special block or tool involved and creation mode allows your own stages to share with friends and post them to the internet. You do have to unlock some stage pieces first though before you can create your own stages, so it’s better to finish the adventure mode first.

Each stage in adventure and explore mode has a bronze, silver and gold goal and players receive awards, stage pieces and trophies when they complete these stages on a certain goal level. Players can even receive prizes for completed whole levels with complete gold stages.

Controls a pretty easy to pick up as you are basically using the Wii remote like you’re are throwing a ball, but try to remember to keep the cursor on the screen or the cursor tends to freeze. I found flicking my wrist to throw the ball instead of big ball hurling actions made the game much easier to control and avoided the cursor freezing problem completely.

The graphics are very colourful and the blocky characters in the game are so cute that I could see them easily selling in toy stores. The music is happy and bouncy; perfect for a game like this. Boom Blox is just the perfect game for families, because everyone can pick it up and play without having to learn complex controls. Kids will love the cartoon graphics and parents will get addicted to the problem solving aspect of the game.

A couple of weeks ago I did a review of GTA IV which is a huge, complex videogame and perhaps beyond its years in the gaming technology. This week I review a game which takes a simple concept and turns into a unique and addictive game, which in my opinion can easily stand beside a game like GTA IV and be called its equal. That’s why I love being a gamer, because any game, no matter how simple, can be a incredible game as long as it’s done right.

Call of Duty: World at War Debut Trailer

Treyarch and Activision have finally released the debut trailer for Call of Duty: World at War. They showed off the teaser trailer on Gametrailers.com, but they also release the full length trailer for the game as well, which is posted above.

This game better be amazing or there will be some pretty ticked off fans. Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4 has seen huge success and Treyarch will have to create a masterpiece to unhorse Call of Duty from its spot at the top of the Call of Duty franchise success list.

My First Spore Creature

So I went and downloaded the full version of the Spore Creature Creator and this is one of my first creations. I call it a Goldune and he was inspired by the evil creatures in Dark Crystal and the Dragon in The Storyteller Series.

I have one more creature video to upload which I'll post when I do. My other creature is inspired by a videogame creature. Guess which one? Let's just say I couldn't get the creature's signature call right, which really ticked me off.

Cool Yoshi Mosaic

Anne & Kita made this sweet looking Yoshi Mosaic made with glass tiles in their lab at grad school. They haven't decided how to finish it off yet and I personally think it would make a nice outdoor table.

I like tile project but the whole grout thing gets too messy, so I prefer to stick to my beads. Still wick cool though.

Review: Speed Racer: The Videogame for the Nintendo DS & Wii

Speed Racer
Warner Bros Interactive, Sidhe
Available for Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS

When most people think about a video game based on a movie, we tend to think about crappy studio cash grabs, but surprisingly Speed Racer, the videogame based on the recent blockbuster movie, didn’t turn out to be such bad game after all, on either Nintendo Wii or Nintendo DS.

Each version of the game allows players to experience what it’s like to be in the driver’s seat of Speed Racer car as you speed through tunnels, drive around loop de loops tracks and try to take out your rival’s car with “car fu” moves. Each game had a good selection of drivers from the Speed Racer series that you could choose to play as and the Wii version even had some of the actors like Christina Ricci and Emile Hirsh doing their voice-overs.

In the Wii version, you could play three different game modes: single race let you drive for practice, while time trial let you attempt to break your race times. The championship mode had you racing against 20 other cars and awarded you points depends on where you place in the race. You had to place 1, 2 or 3 to beat a race, which would then unlock new competitions, cars and drivers.

In the DS version, you could play five different game modes: quick race let you practice drive, time attack let you set time records alone on the tracks, quick stunts had you beating records for the most fans gained by performing stunts and quick battle had you defeating a record number of opponents on the track. Finally World Racing League mode allowed players to run 3 or 5 tracks to win tournament cups. Points are awarded based on where you place in the races and the person with the most points wins the tournament.

Multiplayer mode allows you to play against other people in the room with you on the Nintendo Wii, but the Nintendo DS version allows you to play with up to 6 players via multi-card play.

In both versions of the game, players must attempt to knock out opponents with “car fu” moves in order to stay ahead of the race. While these barrel rolls and 360 spins were pretty easy to pull off in the DS version, I found myself losing a lot of races, if I tried any moves on the Nintendo Wii version. Driving was very easy in the both games, which surprised me in the Wii version, because I figured holding the Wii remote sideways and tipping it back and forth would be way too hard to control the car with. I managed to run smoothly through the tracks with ease and I didn’t even need my car fu moves to win most of the races.

Graphics were pretty stellar on both games. The Speed Racer movie had bright, neon environments that transferred wonderfully into a videogame design. The track were well laid out and somewhat reminded me of the old F-Zero franchise with its crazy twists and turns. I really wish the developers had gotten the rights to some clips from the movie though for the Wii version, because I think they would have made the game better than the 2D pictures.

The audio for environments and sound effects were good, but the voice-overs were a little flat. For trained actors, Christina and Emile could have much done better with the one liners and truthfully I didn’t even think it was the real actors until I saw their names in the manual.

I’ve played a lot of movie videogames in the past and as far as Speed Racer goes I would have liked to see more tracks to race on, but over all, this is actually a pretty decent game. Fans of the movie will enjoy hitting the track and pulling off some sweet car fu moves and families will really enjoy the multi-player modes on either versions of the game.

Happy Tree Friends Trailer Features Bloody Game Play

The new Happy Tree Friends Trailer finally features some sweet gameplay footage, but truthfully I am confused on whether you are suppose to win the game by killing all the cute woodland creatures or by safely getting your woodland creatures through the maze of killer devices.

I'm confused, cause usually games have you keeping your characters safe, but every Happy Tree Friends cartoon ends with each character dead, killed in some horrible, bloody way. Should that be the premise of the videogame?

Either way, the game looks bloody good. Get it ... bloody good.

Review: Wii Fit

Wii Fit
Nintendo
Available now for the Nintendo Wii

Nintendo is hoping to end gym memberships forever with their newest creation, Wii Fit for the Nintendo Wii. With videogames being blamed for health problems and kids being overweight, this new idea from the creator of Mario & Link, Shigeru Miyamoto, will hopefully change that bad view and open parents to the idea that videogames can help kids lose a few pounds.

Wii fit comes with a balance board; a flat, white board with four balance points that measure your weight and centre of balance. The Wii Fit system uses the board in conjunction with different exercise modes to help you lose weight, strengthen your muscles and perfect your balance. There are four game modes: yoga, muscle workouts, balance games and aerobic exercises, and each of these modes have different activities or games you can play to help your body get fit in a different way.

Before you can jump into the activities though, you have to go through the BMI test (Body Mass Index) to determine whether you are at a healthy weight. This is determined by your age, sex, weight and height. Once you figured out, you can set a health goal to lose weight or build muscle by a certain date and the Wii Fit system will help you track your progress.

Several activities in each game mode are unlocked from the beginning for you to perform and you can unlock more activities by earning time points from each activity you do. More time you spend on each activity the more time points you get. Each activity gives you a score when you complete it, so you can see how well you did and compare to other people using the system if you like.

For the Yoga and Muscle activities, you can choose a male or female trainer to tell you what to do for each exercise. The trainers perform each exercise once step by step for you to see from the front or back, and then you go through the steps with them. The balance board also knows if you’re doing the moves correctly, based on your pressure points on the board. I found that these exercises really work, if you do them at the right speed and the right way - the trainer even helps to keep you going during each set.

Balance and Aerobic games use your Mii characters and tend to be more fun, even if they still make you break a sweat. The aerobic games range from spinning and catching hula-hoops or using the board as a stepping board. You can even put the Wiimote in your pocket and jog on the spot as you go for a run through a park, as other Miis in your system are passing by. It’s quite funny having your celebrity Miis like Darth Vader or Zelda running by you in the park.

The balance games range from tilting your head and body to block soccer balls or tilting back and forth to ski down a hill. These games are extremely hard until you get use to your center of balance and the sensitivity of the balance board.

While the Wii Fit system definitely makes you sweat, I’m not sure if I would recommend it as the next home gym system to everyone I know. Sure it has tons of great exercise activities that are proven to help people lose weight and build muscle, but I can’t see any one who goes to the gym on a regular basis finding this to be the perfect solution to all their fitness needs.

For the average gamer geek who’s managed to put on a few pounds thanks to hours spent running through Azeroth instead of their local park, I would suggest picking up Wii Fit as a way keep fit on a day to day basis. Plus with the prospect of some many games coming out that will use the Will Fit board as a controller, it’s not such a bad item to have in the house.

My Name is Bob and I'm an Angry Gamer

We all get frustrated playing video games. No one likes to lose and no one likes to run the same level over and over again trying to complete it. It sucks when a game isn’t going your way.

How each of us reacts to the frustration is different though. I tend to shut the game off when I get frustrated and try it again the next day when I have a clear head. Others, like someone close to me, tend to freak out when they’re losing. They’ll scream, swear and even throw controllers when they are frustrated with a game.

I understand that sometimes getting angry with a game is better for some people because its better to take your frustrations out on a piece of plastic than your family or friends, but after several broken controllers or systems is can get expensive to have an angry gamer in the house.

If you are an angry gamer or know someone who is, here are some tips for dealing with anger during gaming sessions.

1. Keep an item such as a pillow or stuffed animal beside you when playing, so that you can punch or throw the item instead of throwing the controller, hitting something valuable or hitting someone near you.

2. If you are going to scream and swear during an online gaming session, don’t use your headset. In the end, all you will end up with is a bunch of bad reviews from the people playing you and fewer people wanting to play with you.

Multiple colours to match the impact marks.

3. If you are a PS2 player, invest in the Nerf Pelican PS2 controller. The rubber skin on the controller allows it to take more damage without breaking than normal controllers do. This way you’ll spend less money on replacement controllers.

4. When you buy your system, invest in a second controller with a protection warranty. This will cover all the controllers you break during a moment of rage. It’s better to pay $20 now than $50 later for each controller you smash and you’ll always have an extra controller available for when you do break one.

5. Always remember that it’s just a game and no matter how mad you get, NEVER take out your anger on a living thing. Objects can be replaced, but people and animals can’t.

He was so young and now he's gone.

For those of you living with an angry gamer, here are some tips to deal with them:

1. Try listening to some music with a pair of noise canceling headphones that way you don’t have to listen to them screaming at the TV.

2. Don’t try to change the behavior of the angry gamer because its better that they take their frustrations out on the game then anything else. Some people just need an outlet for all their daily stress.

You better run, bitch!

3. Never make fun of an angry gamer when they are losing. You’re just asking for a controller to be thrown at your head.

4. If you are playing online with an angry gamer, just ignore them. Fighting with them only takes away from your fun. If possible, just put them on mute.

I hope these tips help all the angry gamers out there and anyone living with them.

Review: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness/Time

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness/Time
Nintendo, Chunsoft
Both available on Nintendo DS

Mash ups are great when they bring two wonderful items together to make something even more magical, but Chunsoft’s idea of combining Pokemon and Mystery Dungeon games, two wonderful games on their own, didn’t quite work out to better creation together. While they’ve done this before with these two franchises, I doubt they were any better than the two Pokemon Mystery Dungeon titles, I’m about to review.

Players, in either version of PMD, are treated to playing as Pokemon, instead of a trainer, which the type is determined by the game through a neat personality quiz. You then get to pick your dungeon crawling Poke-partner from a small selection of different Pokemon, but choose carefully, because your partner with be with you throughout the whole game.

The plots for both games start off the same; your character awakes on a beach and finds a Pokemon trying to wake you up. While you appreciate their help, but you can’t figure out how you understand him, because Pokemons can’t talk to humans, but then you suddenly realize that you’re no longer a human, but a Pokemon too! From there the plot takes you and your new friend eventually to a guild where you sign up to perform tasks to earn money, items and level up your skills, all the while trying to discover the original of your transformation and the mystery behind the time gears.

With two versions of the PMD games, players who choose to play both versions will be rewarded with different types of Pokemon in each game, different layouts for the dungeons (which change every time you enter them anyway) and different opening scenes. Well worth it, if you’re a massive Poke-fan.

While most Pokemon games are well developed games, the mystery dungeon format is too intense for a Nintendo DS game and too hard for a kid’s game, which removes these games from two key markets that most Pokemon games tend to target. I play a lot of my DS games at work and you couldn’t save your game casually, so I found myself having to use the battery save feature on my Nintendo DS and hoping that nothing happened to turn the game off or pop the game card until I could find time to save it properly. Portable games need a good casual save feature or they won’t go over well, especially with busy adult players.

The difficulty of the games were so frustrating and unforgiving, I probably would have tossed the game card against the wall, if I hadn’t been borrowing it from a friend. If you or your partner dies, you both go back to the guild to start a new day over, plus you lose your money and some of your items. You can save your money and items at little banks, but you need all the items possible in the dungeons just to survive, so you just end up losing those items in no time.

The battle system allows you one basic attack and one special attack at a time, and with such limited attack choices during battle, death comes quickly and often. Special enemy attacks like bind or poison really took my characters down quickly and I couldn’t even buy healing items to remove those effects. Basically the system isn’t simple to master and if I’m having trouble as a skilled adult gamer, imagine how a 9-year-old is going to fair.

The graphics in the Pokemon franchise have definitely come a long way since I played them on my Gameboy Colour and I was really happy to see such colourful and detailed cartoon characters now. The sounds have been updated too, with the critters making cute, little poke-noises, instead of those horrible, screeching sounds they had on the old Gameboy versions.

Being that is the first Pokemon game I’ve had the chance to play since the days of the Red, Blue and Yellow versions, I was really looking forward to getting back into the franchise, but I think I jumped back in with the wrong series. I just found these games to be too hard and not very rewarding with the constant dying and restarting.

We, Pokemon purists, should probably stick with the latest Diamond & Pearl versions, while Mystery Dungeon/Pokemon fans can keep their weird hybrid games, because they don’t seem to play very well together as a team.

Nintendo Insults Faithful Fans at WiiWare Launch Event

Being a long time fan of Nintendo, I was really upset to hear news of the horrible comments spoken today about the supporters of the Wii Virtual Console, especially when I found out it came directly from the mouth of one of Nintendo's own employees.

Reporting from a WiiWare launch event in the U.K., Edge magazine quotes Nintendo of Europe marketing director Laurent Fischer as saying that only "geeks and otaku" want the company to introduce some kind of upgrade to the Wii's 512 MB of game storage.

This statement is not only insulting to the legions of Nintendo fans who have spent their hard earned dollars on Virtual Console games and WiiWare games, but also to the developers who have worked hard to create games for WiiWare download. It only takes a few games and save files to fill up the Nintendo Wii's small storage space, and no one likes the idea of having to delete and redownload titles just to get new ones down the road.

I really hope that Nintendo figures out a better system of storage for the downloadable content for the system and someone at Nintendo fires Mr. Fischer for his insulting and damaging remarks towards Nintendo long time fans. Fans, who I may add kept Nintendo afloat long before the casual gaming market appeared with the launch of the Nintendo Wii and DS.

We stuck with you though the Nintendo 64 and the Gamecube. Doesn't that mean something?

This is the new Wii Fit commercial playing on TV in North America right now. It has the most addictive song playing on it and I couldn't get it out of my head until I found it. You will have to rebuild the computer database and thwart Professor Pester's evil plot by sending piñatas at full candiosity to parties all around the world.

I don't know about you, but I'm ready for some more pinata incest, porn and cannibilism.

2K Games Announces Sid Meier;s Civilization IV: Colonization for PC

2K Games, announced today that Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Colonization, the next game in the long running series of Civilization IV games, is currently in development at 2K's Firaxis Games development studio. Conceived from the ground up to take advantage of the Civilization IV engine, Colonization will be available fall 2008 exclusively for the PC.

"We've received many requests from fans over the years to bring back Colonization and now seemed to be the perfect time to do that," said Sid Meier, director of creative development at Firaxis Games. "The Civilization IV engine provided a fantastic foundation for a newColonization experience and allowed us to create something great for both new players and long time fans of the game."
In Colonization, players lead one of four European nations on a quest to conquer and rule the New World. Players will be challenged to guide their people from the oppressive motherland, discover the New World, and negotiate, trade and fight with both the natives and other nations as they acquire power and fight for freedom and independence.

As a complete reimagining of the 1994 classic, Colonization is a total conversion of Civilization IV that combines Civilization's "just one more turn" gameplay with all-new graphics and features that add more depth to the franchise. Other new features in the game will include a brand-new interface, improved diplomacy options and included modding tools.

As a big fan of the RTS genre, I look forward to checking Civilization IV: Colonization when it hits store shelves this fall.

Review: The Dog Island

The Dog Island
Ubisoft
Available for Nintendo Wii and Playstation 2

Ubisoft has jumped into the Nintendog market with their latest kid friendly creation for the Nintendo Wii, The Dog Island. Played from the perspective of a puppy, players get to choose their character from a list of 48 different breeds of dogs and then modify its colour.

The plot of The Dog Island starts with your little puppy’s sibling sick and after sneaking out of the house to watch you win the actual festival’s treasure hunt, he/she collapses into a worse state than before. The town doctor is unable to do anything further to help your sibling, but he knows of a doctor on The Dog Island that could cure this strange illness. Of course, you volunteer to bring the Doctor back and your exciting adventure to the Island begins.

While Nintendogs had you interacting with your puppy, Dog Island has you controlling your puppy in a world inhabited by dogs and other animals. You must navigate your way through the world completing tasks given to you, to ultimately bring the Doctor and his cure for your sibling back to your hometown. Most of the tasks will involve you sniffing around a lot and collecting items to bring back to other dogs on the island, but there are other games you can play along the way like soccer, fishing or racing.

Most of these tasks will have you running back and forth a lot and even after you open up some warp points in the game, you’ll still find the game requires you to do a lot of running around. As you complete these fun tasks, you receive dog bones from your doggy friends which can be use to purchase items in the town’s stores. You can use them to dress your puppy up in hats, glasses or other fun accessories.

Parents buying this game for their kids will probably like the fact that there is no violence whatsoever in this game. Any enemies in the game really only scare your puppy with their nasty noises and your only attack is to bark back. The trick to succeed in this situation with enemies is to read their thought bubble to determine if they notice you and then try to sneak past without a confrontation.

Using the Wii remote, movements are performed with a point and click system, while actions are performed with the A & B buttons. Accuracy in your puppy’s movements is difficult especially while trying to sneak past enemies in the game, and I found if I didn’t run past really quick or clicked an inch at a time to sneak past, I would accidentally end up somehow on top my sleeping enemies.

Graphically, Dog Island looked a little too much like the Nintendogs games and for a Nintendo Wii game, I was hopefully for a little bit more. The different dog breeds in the game do look a lot like their real life counterparts and I was impressed that the developers took the time to put so many different choices in the game, but they could have put a little bit more of an effort into making the graphics just a little bit more updated for the console it was running on.

The song at the beginning of the game is so cute and with all the puppies running around your TV screen, you almost want to run out and adopt every dog at your local Humane Society. The music is very public television, sugary-sweet, kid’s show type stuff and you almost expect Sesame Street characters to jump out during the game at some point.

I know this is a kid’s game, but part of me still likes to play with puppies. Nintendog and Animal Crossing fans might find The Dog Island right up their alley with the mix of puppies and community fetch missions, but hardcore games who love their FPSs might want to stay away from this game, unless they plan on buying it for their kids.

Metal Gear Solid 4 - Insert Disc 2

Blu-Ray is magical and much better than any old Xbox 360 disc.

This video is from the New Metal Gear Solid 4 and is pretty funny. Nice to see the developers have a good sense of humor, especially about their old games.

Leaked Kingdom Hearts - Birth By Sleep Trailer - Translated

Apparently someone leaked the trailer for the new Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep game for the PSP and though I missed this video released when it came out a complete of days ago, I did find the translated version of the video today.

There does seem to be a couple of spots where maybe the person forgot to translated or something, because someone is talking but there isn't any words on the screen, but all in all, the words seem to fit what's going on.

There seems to be two new key characters - Terra and his Master, plus a new enemy type or character that tries to attack Roxas, when Mickey shows up to protect him. It looks like the game might have a storyline that involves Roxas trying to fill in the missing pieces in his memories.

GOD I CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS GAME!!

X-Play's Face Time with Gamer Girl & Playboy's CyberGirl of 2008, Jo Garcia

G4TV got some face time with Playboy's newest CyberGirl of the Year, Jo Garcia, who just so happens to be a gamer girl too. Of course, the internet trolls came out of their caves demanding proof that this cyber vixen was really a gamer, otherwise it couldn't be true, so X-Play came to the rescue and helped Jo prove she could play with the best of them.

I think the guys at G4TV just wanted to hang out with a Playboy girl though, but I would too.

As it proved, Jo could kick butt at games like Street Fighter 2 and Mario Kart Wii, so back to your caves, internet trolls. Jo has proven bunnies can play games too.

Look What I Found - Super Mario 3D Candy

I'm 27 years old and I still love candy. I can't have chocolate because it's one of my migraine triggers, so I tend to eat things like cake and gummi candy.

Today I found this at the drug store and I couldn't help but buy them. Gummi Marios, Yoshis, Donkey Kongs and such are so cute. The tip inside was kind of lame though. It was for Yoshi's Island DS and I don't know if you can read it but it has something to do with Baby Wario being able to collect coins.

I've had these gummis before in a mini Gameboy case, but I like this packaging better. It has more pieces and it doesn't have the demented looking Link in it.

Review: Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness - Episode One

Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness - Episode One
Hothead Games
Available for Xbox Live Arcade and PC Download

This week’s game is an actual based on the popular web comic, Penny Arcade that has been commenting on the gaming industry and its faults since Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins created it back in 1998. And who better to create the perfect videogame than two guys whose entire careers have been spent critiquing videogames. So let’s put the guys from Penny Arcade in the hot seat for once with this week’s review of Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness for Xbox Live Arcade.

Truly I think you have to be a fan of the web comics to understand and enjoy the humour of this game, so if you’ve never read a Penny Arcade comic before, I suggest you drop this review right now, head to www.penny-acrade.com and set aside an hour to read the web comic from the very first panel. I think then and only then can you fully appreciate anything I am about to tell you about this game, so please read the comic first. If you are a gamer, you will thank me for introducing you to Penny Arcade and if you are a geek, you will add me to your face book account and sent me a long message thanking me for changing your life for the better. Trust me, the web comic is that good.

Penny Arcade Adventures starts off your gaming experience with a character creation screen where you can choose your gender, clothes, hair, colour scheme, etc., however your choices are limited to the story’s era, so your character will have no choice but to like an extra from The Untouchables.

Once you throw on your fedora, your character is thrust into a world of fruit-humping robots, dirty-minded clowns and zombie-like hobos, all of which you must battle along side your new two companions, Gabe and Tycho, owners of the Starling Developments detective agency, as you attempt to save the world from a cult of Mimes hell bent on bringing about the next apocalypse.

PA uses a turn-based system for normal & specials attacks as well as item usage during enemy battles and it incorporates a block feature to allow players to block enemies attacks fully or partially. The blocking system works perfectly when you understand how it works, but if you don’t, it can be very frustrating. Without being able to block, the game will suddenly go from a manageable level to it practically letting the robots hump you instead of the fruit.

The humour in this game was pure Tycho and Gabe and fans will be please to see endless uses of the guys’ pure brand of goofiness all over this game. It’s unfortunate that they chose to go with the 1920s detective genre in their plot, because it really killed any chance of seeing any humour directed at the gaming industry on a grand scale, but the game still managed to shine through with the key things we, PA fans, love about the series and I think that all we were really wanting out of these games anyway.

Instead of just sticking with the 2D look of the comic series, Mike and Jerry decided to incorporate some 3D modeling into the main game play which, while not as cool looking as the game’s 2D cut scenes, still managed to make the usual flat characters look pretty incredible. Best of all, while the art designers did a great job on beautifully detailing the 3D rendered environments and characters; they never lost sight on the original cartoon concept.

The sound was extremely well done in this game, and though I was disappointed there were no voiceovers for Tycho and Gabe, I was absolutely awestruck by the voice of the narrator. His deep and mysterious voice reading the poem at the beginning of the game was pure genius and I really missed him throughout the bulk of the game. The music is magical and very Danny Elfman like, so any Tim Burton fans in the house will love this game’s soundtrack.

Besides the annoying learning curve on the blocking system and the fact you have to fork out $20 (1600 Microsoft Points) for roughly an 8-10 hour game, I really can’t say anything bad about this game, except that it maybe lost on non-Penny Arcade fans. Otherwise, I highly suggest that anyone who loves the PA comics downloads this game, because for two guys who love to make fun of other people’s games for a living, they certainly know how to put their money where their mouth is.

Did you think I'd miss posting this ... DAHHHH! New Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party Videos

I know I'm a couple of days behind on posting these, but honestly did any one really believe I would forget to post them? I never miss a rabbid related post and if you see anything that I miss I expect you to email me immediately with a link. It would be most appreciated.

So Ubisoft announced their new Rayman Raving Rabbids Game - TV Party which, of course is a party mini game and really would we have it any other way. Ubisoft is one of the early adopters and has already created mini games that utilize the new Wii fit board for the new Rabbids game. Of course, this now explains the latest viral video Ubisoft released a while back featuring a rabbid playing with the wii fit board.

Warning: This video contains a man wearing a suit that's looks like it has a giant hole cut out of the back to show off his butt during game play. Yes, his butt is playing the videogame and Ubisoft wanting you to see how he played the game with his butt, so they put him in a tight spandex suit with some white patch or a hole in the back to show out his butt gaming prowess.

The mini games previewed in the trailer are a downhill cow sledding game that uses the wii fit board much like a snow sled where you have to control it by sitting on the board and pulling each side to tip the board towards the direction you wish to move the sled and there's also a dance move game where you use the wii remotes to performance dance routines as they appear on the screen. Much like Boogie but better hopefully.

The game looks fun and imaginative as usual. I look forward to playing it when it comes out.

Golden Axe: Beast Rider - Sexy Red-Headed Chick Riding Beasts ... Need I Say More

Man, this is the year of sexy chicks with red hair and games with characters named Faith, which basically means this is truly the best year of gaming for me.

Now Sega released their new trailer for Golden Axe: Beast Rider which is a sequel or remake of the Golden Axe series that was so popular in the arcades back in the day. I even remember playing it at roller rink one time or two. Yeah, I spent more time playing the arcade games at the roller rink than roller skating because I alway fell and the games were safer.

So the some of the new changes in the games are apparently that you only get to play the main female character who is some sexy warrior chick with lusty, red locks and you won't be able to play two player co-op play like the original Golden Axe. Also apparently characters from the first game are still available in the game but only as NPCs, and Sega promises the game will focus more on the beast riding which the original game didn't.

Before you only had a few moments to ride the beasts until some enemy knocked you off and the damn mount ran off on you. The goblins are still available in the game and will still steal stuff off you in your sleep until you find them and knock the stuffing out of them. Different colour goblins will have different abilities or items, I think.

That's about all I've heard so far about the game, but I'll post more as it comes across my lap.

Early Demo Codes for Battlefield: Bad Company Still Up For Grabs!

[All the codes have been won. Thanks to everyone who entered!]

Here's a little demo trailer to inspire any of the late comers to the Battlefield: Bad Company contest.

I still have 10 codes to give away, so any one wanting to jump in on my contest still has a chance before the demo comes out on June 5th. Just follow the link to the contest post to find out how you can enter to win an early demo code for Battlefield: Bad Company for the Xbox 360.

Hurry up though, or you'll end up having to wait just like everyone else.

Ubidays 2008: Prince of Persia: Next Gen Trailer

Ubisoft releases the debut trailer for a series of Prince of Persia games that will rewrite the history on the series as we know it. The Sands of Time/Warrior Within Series of stories is done and Ubisoft has promised that this Prince of Persia is truly a new generation in the series with a brand new Prince to lead the way.

I posted about new Prince of Persia game and the website a while back, and its nice to finally see what Ubisoft has been working on for the series. I wasn't a huge fan of the last Prince series and actually got so frustrated with them that I traded them in after buying both Sands of Time and Warrior Within. Honestly PoP:WW, I couldn't even get pass the first level which actual started with a boss battle and the Sands of Time game, I could get pass the second level due to some move I couldn't pull off or something. I just remember the controls being really difficult to master.

But this game looks so good that I'm willing to give the Prince of Persia series a clean slate and a second chance.

New Resident Evil 5 Trailer - Man without a parasite ridden body coming through!

Newest trailer for Resident Evil 5 looks incredible. We finally get to see more about the game and understand we'll be up against in the latest installment in the series.

Your zombies seem to be more like the enemies from RE 4 with the whole weird parasites infecting their bodies and forcing others to ingest the parasite creatures too. There seems to be a crazy cult leader again too, but this time he screaming about people trying to take their land and how those people are going to die.

You see some sort of underground temple ruins in the first few frames of the trailer, which makes me think that maybe the villagers covered the parasites in these ruins and it basically spread from there. Much like Resident Evil 4, there will be multiple types of parasites and boss parasites to kill. Funny stuff!

Also you get to see one of the support characters in the game who's a strong, black female character, which will hopefully make the people calling this game racist, happy. Look Capcom believes that people from all races should help kill zombies to save the world, not just white people. The female character seems to be possible from Africa or at least familiar with Africa and she might not know Chris Redfield from previous games.

Capcom seems to have incorporated the crowd mechanics from Dead Rising into the game which I'm not sure if I like that idea. If anyone remembers, I really didn't like Dead Rising and if Capcom puts any of the irritating points from that game into my Resident Evil, I'll slap them. Bad enough they keep ruining Mega Man - I won't let them kill my Resident Evil.

This is the only media in the world that I'll brave scary zombies to play, besides the RE movies and Shawn of the Dawn. Beyond that they have to be PG-13 Zombies for me to watch them, even then I've been scared. (There was a Goosebumps movie ... don't ask. I'm not proud.)

Can't wait for the game to be released. Looks pretty darn spiffy.
