Little Gamer's Nursery Covered in Yoshi's Island Theme

Why couldn't my sister have done something cool like this for her baby's room?

Well, if everyone doesn't know by now, I'm about to become an aunt again for the second time. My sister is ready to pop any day now with my second nephew who will hopefully become a little gamer in training like my current nephew who loves Mario Kart on the Gamecube.


Unfortunately my sister is not a gamer geek like me, so she decorated the baby's room in a cute zoo animal theme which is fine but I personally love what flickr user, Meadsblog did with their baby nursery. The entire nursery was decorated in a Yoshi's Island theme complete with Yoshi's eggs, Baby Mario/Yoshi and Baby Peach/Yoshi decals on the walls, and tons of framed artwork from the game.

If I had my choice, I would probably good with a Mario themed bedroom for my kid's room too or a Legend of Zelda theme.

Girls of the Arcade from 70s & 80s

Of course, not much is sexier than a hot chick next to a bunch of videogame stuff but if you think our generation created nerdcore hotties than I have a website that about to blow your mind.

Sure, you can't exactly drape a girl with an arcade machine unless you want a really strange picture and a big mess to clean up after wards, but the advertising gurus back in the 70s & 80s still understood that men liked to see sexy ladies next to their gaming machines, so they learned to do the next best thing with their models ... pose them next to the machine - Vanna White style.

Art of the Arcade has a wicked section featuring pictures of models posing beside different arcade machines. Now some are just regular model shots but some are a little more focused on skin than machine, like our lovely Tank Battalion model above. Nice undies, are those regulation gear, soldier?

Epic 8 Bit Art: Left 4 Dead Survivors in 8 Bit Mode

Time to showcase some more wicked pieces from my Pixelgasm forum members.

This week I found a cool set of Left 4 Dead bead sprites created by Geek Mythology & Jhex. These sprites were created to show off what the 4 survivors from Left 4 Dead might look like had they been created during the days of the NES or Super Nintendo much like the Half Life sprites I posted last week.

Chibi Robo Figure is So Cute!

I'm always a fan of Kody Koala custom videogame pieces and his latest art piece is no exception to the rule.

Kody's custom Chibi Robo figure is a mash up of lego pieces, a highlighter and a electrical plug. Seeing this little guy makes me wish I had actually played one of the Chibi Robo games at some point.

Oh well, something to add to my "To Do" list.

Review: Prince of Persia: The Fallen King

On the heels of the latest Prince of Persia console game release, Ubisoft has also released Prince of Persia: The Fallen King for the Nintendo DS. Though The Fallen King’s Prince character is slightly modeled after the current Prince character in the console storyline, this Nintendo DS game actually brings its own story, characters and new style to the Prince of Persia series, so don’t expect a copycat version here.

This time around the prince is trying to survive a world that has fallen into darkness. The god of chaos, Ahriman has unleashed a cloud of corruption that has begun to plague the kingdom. The Prince, following a tip, decides to head to a reputed safe haven, but instead finds the town to be rife with corrupted creatures and a trio of floating magic users. It is up to the Prince to find the god of light and obtain his help to rid the kingdom of the corruption. However the Prince does not have to do it alone. Along his journey the Prince encounters a Magus by the name of Zal whose magic draws the corruption to him and has corrupted the lower part of his body. With Zal’s magic to aid he in his mission the Prince must stop Ahriman and his forces before all hope is lost.


Prince of Persia: The Fallen King plays much like your typical side scrolling action adventure, but with a very unique twist. The entire game is controlled using the stylus, while the buttons on the Nintendo DS are completely useless. Problem is though, if you move your stylus a bit too high or a bit too far to the left, you’ll cause Prince to fall to his death over and over again. Luckily the developers put a lot of check points in the game, so don’t worry if you never master the art of the stylus controls.

The Fallen King does stay true to the Prince of Persia style of acrobatics as the Prince is still able to perform a multitude of wall climbing, wall jumping, and wall sliding moves. Movement in the game is quite simple controlled by either sliding the stylus along the bottom of the screen or holding it still at the other end. The combat system has you just tapping each enemy as they approach to attack. Pretty simple sounding but when put into practice you find that Prince doesn’t seem to respond properly to most of your actions. You move him to jump and he just walks off the cliff. Grand ...

The background graphics are rich and most of the objects lying around in game become interactive at some point or another in the game. The character designs have a very manga chibi style feel which makes the game play experience feel much like a living comic book. Even the stylus has its own effect when touched to the screen. Dragging the pointer across the field leaves a trail of glittering blue-white light that greatly improves the overall look and feel of the game. All in all the game is very clean and appealing to the eye.


The sound could have been much better considering the effort they put behind the graphics in this game. The sound comes off very budget which was a huge disappointment especially when the newest console version of Prince of Persia had a beautiful and haunting soundtrack. When you’re on the level select screen navigating the stages, the same track plays for the entire time and when you’re in a game level, you’ll hear the another boring track run over and over again until you clear the stage. So if you decided to turn the volume all the way down on your DS, don’t worry, you won’t be missing anything. Also there are no voiceovers in this game only text conversations, so be prepared to read a lot of text.

While Prince of Persia: The Fallen King is a pretty looking game, its lack of button controls made it down right frustrating to play and difficult to enjoy. While I am a fan of the console version of Prince of Persia, I honestly think that Ubisoft should have put more energy and time into this instalment of the franchise before they released it into the wild because it’s hard to believe after playing both Prince of Persia and this that the same company could create two completely different games: one perfectly wonderful and exotic and one so god awful to control and listen to. I suggest Prince of Persia fans stick to the console version and leave The Fallen King on the store shelves.

Happy Towel Day - Don't Panic! - UPDATED

Happy Towel Day in honor of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy!

Today's the day when you grab a towel and take it with you cause you never know when you're going to need it. Of course, I rock cause not only do I have a soft fluffy blue towel to take with me today but I have a soft fluffy blue towel that has the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy name printed on it! Ah yeah, I am geek!

Though I have never actually sat down and read the book, I have seen the most current movie and the BBC version of the book which I think was better. I do own the book so maybe today is a good excuse to finally read the darn thing.

Happy Towel Day all, and remember "Don't Panic!"

UPDATED: I think I should have brought a towel with me today. Just on my trip down to my Mom's house today I saw a car accident on the highway involving two cars and a huge fire in a commercial building by the highway. Now all I need is for my sister to go into labour and this day will be complete. And it would give me a great excuse to use my towel. ;)

Batman: Arkham Asylum - Poison Ivy Trailer

I truly love whomever is calling the shots on the development team for Batman: Arkham Asylum right now cause this game is going to be incredible!

This game keeps looking better and sounding better. This new footage of Poison Ivy looks amazing and the actress providing her voice over sounds exactly like the original Poison Ivy from Batman: the Animated Series, if its not the same woman, Diane Pershing.

Epic 8 Bit Art - Pixelated Paint and Sticker Art

So in my spare time between making bead creations for my store and writing, I've starting branching out into new forms of art like painting and sticker art.

Using stickers and a couple of binders as backgrounds, I made two pieces featuring Pac Man and Space Invaders. The materials I grabbed at the dollar store for cheap and then I just figured out what sprites I could make from red, blue, green, yellow and white coloured pixels.

I plan to seal the stickers on with a clear glue that you use for puzzles and hopefully that will keep them from peeling off.

I've only made one pixel art painting so far and it a rough piece at that. Raccoon Mario from Super Mario Bros. 3 isn't the neatest painting in the world compared to other artist's pieces I've seen, but practice makes perfect right.

Of course, fused beads will always be my main material for crafts because nothing looks more perfect that fused bead sprites when they're complete but I like the idea of trying new things once and a while.

Monkey Island Coming to Xbox Live Arcade

I'm sorry but it's been one of those months. First this and now I just found out that Monkey Island has been spotted on a Germany USK rating board as a "Special Edition Xbox 360 Re-Release" which means that Monkey Island is probably coming to Xbox Live Arcade or it could be coming out as an actual revamped game disc.

What the Special Edition means no knows is sure of, but speculation is that the game could be redone with better graphics or just come with a pretty poster in the box ... who knows, right?

This is great news, aspecially on the tail of the rumor that Lucas Arts is bringing back a old franchise like Monkey Island or Day of the Tentacle. Who knows maybe this is the franchise they're bringing back and they're starting with a revamp of the original Monkey Island?

Rumor: First Footage of Trico - New Game from Team ICO

This is the new footage that popping up on the internet right now that comes from Playstation Lifestyle. They claim that it's Trico, the newest game from the developers at Team ICO and the footage looks pretty darn convincing to me.

The game seems to center around a young boy and a creature that looks like a griffin or a bird/dog thing. The graphics are pretty stunning for something that's coming through on you tube. Hopefully we'll know more when E3 starts.

Epic 8 bit Bead Art - Half Life on the NES

So what if the Half Life series had started on the original NES system instead of the PC? Well, Arcade Artist and Infinity Wave believe the game would have looked a little something like this.

This cool little art set is created with fused plastic beads and contains a Gordon Freeman, G-man and lab coat headcrab zombie bead sprite. It also comes with a collectible card featuring the "what could have been" NES box art for this Half Life game.

I remember playing this game and finishing every little side quest. The last one I completed was the couple's mask quest that took all three days to complete and if the messed up or missed a part at any point during those three days, you had to start all over again at the beginning of the first day. Worst part was at the end of the three day where you had to go through the puzzle rooms. I always messed up there and it sucked having to go back to the first day again.

I have such an urge now to buy all the old Zelda games on the virtual console. I could buy Zelda 1 and 2 in cartridge form from my NES but the rest will have to be VC downloads.

Review: X-Blades

Southpeak’s newest title, X-Blades has been the talk of the web since its pants-free heroine made her photo debut. The pictures of the plucky little tomb raider had everyone wondering if X-Blades was going to be more than just a pretty face in ass-less chaps or something with actual descent game play and a good storyline. Now that the game is actual on the market, I guess it’s time to finally answer that question.

The story begins when Ayumi, our g-string wearing heroine discovers a map leading to an ancient artifact that contains the power of two powerful Gods, one light and one dark. Ayumi becomes cursed by these Gods once she touches the artefact and must venture to find a way to stop the powers of the Gods from awakening inside her.


Ayumi has a choice of two weapons: her blades which also double as guns. She can also unlock magic spells to use like fire or ice. As Ayumi takes out enemies in each area, she gains souls which can be transferred into your skills to unlock stuff like magic spells or special attacks. Each area has Ayumi clearing a stage of hundreds of enemies and collecting items like power stones. Once she clears the required amount of enemies or destroys the boss enemy, then the door to the next level will unlock.

From the menu, you can also purchase health refills as the game world does not offer any health potions that can used on screen. Your character’s health does return on its own but it does so slowly and it never really offsets the damage your character suffers unless you can find a good spot to hide.

The game makes use of a targeting system but considering how many enemies can be on screen at once, this system is incredible flawed. Tracking enemies as they dart back and forth through your field of view can be both challenging and frustrating at the same time. Ground units are much easier to track than flying units.

While the levels are often small in size the battles can last for a long time. One particular boss battle I fought for over fifteen minutes before I discovered a more efficient way of achieving my goal. The majority of your time will be spent in furious battle against seemingly endless waves of enemies which will get very repetitive and annoying unless you like that sort of thing. *cough* Dynasty Warriors *cough*

Failure in X-Blades results in your character starting back at the beginning of the level with all enemies resetting. Fortunately you get to keep all the souls and other goodies you already picked up. Death doesn’t occur often to be a real nuisance, but untimely deaths into a long fight forcing you to start all over can certainly make ones blood boil. It would certainly help if levels had save points or the ability to quick save your progress but that would certainly dull some of the challenge.


Graphically the game looks great and is enhanced through optional goodies like bump mapping and HDR lighting. Unfortunately the small level sizes rarely allow X-Blades to truly show its capabilities. The game also makes use of anime style cut scenes that are shown every few levels to explain and further the games storyline. It is during these intermissions that the developers advertising of an attractive heroine really comes to light. The camera pans around and behind Ayumi a healthy amount of times to give gamers a nice view of her significant lack of clothing. In fact if Ayumi had any less clothing the game would stand on very different store shelves such as those that cover up their windows and use many neon signs.

Though the game’s style succeeds in creating what looks like an attractive product, truthfully what you really get is just a hollow hack and slash with a sexy lead. X-Blades and its scantily clad heroine may provide an alternative to the much exhausted Tomb Raider franchise, but I personally would rather stick to staring at Lara Croft’s backside through another phoned-in sequel. At least I can look at her throughout the game without blushing.

For the first time of Etsy, one of my fused bead creations has been featured in the treasury section, which is a featured item section of Etsy picked by certain members. (My pieces are in the very first box)

I'm under the Treasury West section (not sure what that means) and under a title called "Up, Up, Down, Down" for a section of videogame crafts picked by Etsy member, Deepshade. It was so cool of her to include my Secret of Mana set in her treasury picks.

While I am slowly working on my own epic project in the background of my bead workshop (soon ....), this week I'm showcasing another one of my fellow bead spriter's epic art pieces finally complete after a long search for the perfect background.

Silvercity Shane decided to create the entire title screen from Super Mario Bros. 3 from beads but instead of wasting money on thousands and thousands of peach beads, he decided to just create all the objects in the pictures from the words to the floor tiles and then fasten them all to a large piece of wood painted peach.

The finished project looks amazing and I salute him on a job well done. I personally would love to hang that baby in my house but I'm sure he already has a few places picked out for it.

Big fan of the Lucas Arts adventures games from back in the day, so these shoes are making me happy right now.

Created by the Maya Plisetskaya, the same artist that created the Monkey Island shoes, these converse shoes are handed painted with scenes from Day of the Tentacle. They sold on eBay for 250.00EUR.

My Super Mario Garden

Generally I'm not much of a green thumb when it comes to plants, so I designed my own way to add colour to my boring green plants.

My fused bead Mario garden set consists of a Mario Mushroom, Piranha Plant and Fire Flower which each have a small stick to insert into your potted plant. I'm currently selling the set on my Etsy store for $10US plus shipping.
